4Runner rear spring bump-stop

Hi guys,

Looked under my truck last night and found that the left bump-stop had broken off and is just bouncing around inside the spring there. The rubber cone inside the coil that takes the shock when you bottom out the suspension.

Looked at the FSM but it didn't really show and I'm having trouble seeing for myself on my truck: what does it mount to and how? It looks like it was attached to the dome-shaped spring seat. It had rusted and just broken all the way around from the look of it - which is slightly odd only because my truck is generally non-rusty! My question I guess is how that dome-shaped piece is mounted. Is that a bolt-in piece, or is that welded in? I can't tell and would like to know what I'm getting into and what parts I need to order before I tear it all apart.....

Thanks,

Chris

Sits on top of coil inserted into it.
Remove coil. Replace.

Sweet, thanks - so if I order the bump stop I'll get the steel "dome" on top with it, or is that separate?

While we're at it - does anyone have a good exploded diagram of the rear suspension? The FSM diagrams I've looked at aren't great. Don't know if there is anything better available or not.

Thanks again,

Chris

The bumpstop bolts to the metal dome thingy with a 12mm bolt. Originally the rubber is bonded to a circle of metal but the metal rusts away. I fixed mine by cutting new metal discs and glueing them to the bumpstop.

If the Dome it's self is rusted out you will have to weld in a filler plate to give the bump stop something to sit against.
This is how mine was. I went to the Junk and robbed the rear Bumpstops off a GMC Jimmy/S10 Blazer. They were the perfect size to weld in over the whole that rust had created. and are slightly longer than stock while being softer.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure that's the case - it's the dome itself I believe. Dang - I was hoping I wouldn't have to weld it - my skills are iffy......

OK guys, busted out the old stick welder, ran some beads, ready to go......

So I don't have a good way to cut a circular piece to cover the hole - anyone happen to know how thick that dome might be? Thinking I'll get a piece the right size cut in advance so I don't have to have the truck off the road long.....

I know this is an old thread.
I found this through trying to see what would be the best way to make repairs to my rusted out overload bumpers. So I just made a video of how I made the repairs. Here is the link, hope this helps a few people out there.

The dome part on mine was completely rusted away, so I cut all the jagged edges and stuff off of it and installed a really tall extended bumpstop on the coil pad. Works great so far, and it's tall enough to compensate for having to go up and inside of the old dome piece on top.

That is a great idea. I was unsure of what to do, so I just went for it.

What size nut and bolt did you use to hold the bump stop in place

Sorry for the delay on this! I just saw this cleaning out my email. I used a metric 12mm X 1.75 nut and bolt. The repair was great and will last many years to come. Hope this helps and again I'm sorry for the delay!
