4Runner Body Removal/rust repair question

Hi, Im about to try to pull the body off my 1990 runner to fix some rust on the frame behind the gas tank. I tried lifting the body a few inches, but its not enough, its pretty much got to come off. Im thinkin me and a few friends could lift it off, sans doors etc. Has anyone here done something like this, and if so how did it go? Iv still got a few days to get all the doors off and unhook all the wiring and stuff, but any tips would be greatly appreciated. thx, Martin

I have not done a 90 runner but have several pickups and older runners. Undo your steering shaft at firewall or gear box. Body bolts, radiator hose, wiring, shifter, fuel filler hose. The brake and clutch line can be undone at the right front tire. I think that is pretty much it. It is not hard to do, lift a few inches at a time and see if you missed anything and go another few inches.

Red face

just where do you plan to set this Body once it is off??

If your friends are all strong and about the same height.

You might get this off but when it is time to go back on every one is busy.

Well, we got it off. We had 7 out of shape guys, and it was close. Friggin thing is Heavy! The body came off almost without a hitch, I missed a wire and a hose off the charcoal canister on the passenger wheelwell, but overall it went pretty well. Getting it back on is going to be harder though. Thx for the advice on the brakelines Terry, saved me from trying to untangle them from the brakebooster. Il post some pics up once it stops raining, damn weather is fickle round here.

OK, After numerous setbacks (the weather, not enough metal to patch all the rust lol, installing a dedicated 20 amp circuit for my welder), I finally got the frame all stitched up. I'll spare you guys having to look at my fab job, but as long as it holds im happy lol. My plan was to strip the frame and repaint it with por 15, which was way more work than I though it would be. So im just doing the spots that are rusty and leaving the rest as is, and touching up any recurring rust with some aerosol type paint. Hopefully that will work for the rust, but if it doesnt I have a parts car that I can take the frame from, and take it to a professional to have it stripped and galvanized/treated and throw that underneath my truck. Anyway I already got some por15 so il slap that on and see how long it lasts lol. Thanks again for the help guys.

Here's some shots of my rig:

Nice! I haven't seen this done often on a 2nd gen 4Runner. I wish I had the space/time to do this to mine.
