I can get a set of used 4.88 gears front a rear for my truck both front a rear open diffs (IFS front/V6 rear) he is asking $450 for both and they have about 150,000 on them are they worth it?

Thats a little much - I paid 350 for a set of front and rear diffs and even that was too much.

Take at least 100 bucks off that or walk away. My donor third had over 300,000kms on it and needed a rebuild to boot.

i thought that some of the v6 pickups came from toyota with the 4.88s stock. like the truck in the bottom of your profile.

Note that the 4.88 factory gears are not regearable if you ever want to go bigger ...

Some automatics did come with factory 4.88 gearing. Mine did. And what TC mentions is true, the factory 4.88's are "thin gears" according to ZUK & can't be regeared.

are factory 4.88s lockable? when you say "thin" that doesn't mean weak does it?

I found a great place to buy gears cheapest I could find with a life time warrenty... master rebuild kit plus gears was 200 a axle pretty cheap

I got my 4.88 geared differentials from a 94 toyota 4runner with an automatic and 31" tires. Factory 4.88's

They are just as strong as other stock toyota gears. You won't have to worry about breaking them.

And only the rear third is a "thin" geared differential. The front 4.88 is the same as any other 7.5" front toyota diff.

ok how hard would it be to install gears into my current thirds I have now? or is that to be left to the pros?

So DeathCouger argues that 5.29's are weak gears because they are thin and Brenjen claims the same of the stock 4.88's diff's. So I ask what a guy is supposed to re-gear with?

The hype about 5.29+ gears being weaker then say 4.10's is all heresay. It all depends on the quality of the setup of the gears. As the gears get bigger the install becomes more crucial. Zuk covered this on his webpage.
