Ok i know gears have been covered 10 million times but i have searched and i cant find the answer i am looking for. I have an 87 4runner with a 22re and a 5 speed. Next month i am going to pull my 3rd member and have an ARB installed in the rear. Ive been thinking it just doesnt make any sense not to regear while it is all apart to 4.88. It sound like most people with this set up run 33" tires and it brings it real close to stock. Now i have almost bran new 31" and dont plan on doing 33" for a while now. How are the 4.88 going to be with 31 and a 5 speed. Anyone running this combination? Any opinions, thoughts or expierience would be greatly appreciated. Also what would you guys do with the front. Would You pull the front diff and have new gears instslled. Or would you find a stock front diff with 4.88 and throw that in there?

it will be to your advantage off road but your RPMs will be high on the streets I am planning on running 5.29s with 33s so I dont see why you cant run 31s on 4.88s (also I ran 31 on my old 82 with 4.56s and wish I had 4.88s)

you will love 4.88's and 31's.

You'll probably get great economy in the city, cause there will always be a perfect gear, but on the highway, you may find you run out of comfortable revs before you reach your desired speed.

In short, if you spend most of your time at low speed (ie <50mph) 4.88s will be fine, if >50mph buy new 33" tires.

my surf has 31s and 4.88s i get 25-30 mpgs diesel

It's only 200 RPM on the highway people!

It may actually HELP your fuel economy by putting you in the power band so you need less throttle position to hold speed.

The problem will be you'll get so used to it that when you DO go to 33's it will feel like a DOG.

I agree with TC. Your throttle position has a huge effect on MPG in these toyotas. Unless I'm going 70+ I'm usually in 4th gear in mine with 4.10's.

Just curious how much the OP payed for his 4.88's. I'm looking for a set of thirds.

Your engine will not have to work as hard, I wouldnt be surprized if your MPG went up all around...

ooo...I'm glad this popped up because I need 4.88's but I think "32's" will be perfect. Power, Size, and I think I can still squeeze a 32 for a spare underneath.

But I hope to find used 4.88's and 32's to match.

Thanks for all the replies. So with everything i have gathered my 4 runner should be quite a bit quicker around town, possibily get better fuel mileage and my RPM's are going to be a little bit higher but nothing that is unbareable.

Anything else i should be aware of?

i was thinking about this same question...

except, i have a 92 runner with a 3.0 and auto transmission. it has a 4.56 and i have 31" tires.

I know it'll help my city driving, but how does it compare to a 5speed on the freeway? am i going to see higher RPMs than a 5speed at higher speeds?

The overdrive in the automatic is MONSTER tall - you will tach way less RPM's than a similarly geared manual transmission rig.

The rigs that came stock with 31's and the auto had 4.88, and even that was undergeared IMHO.
