I have the stock 22re 4.10 set up and am running 32's. I've got a lot of great input from guys on the site and pretty much decided on regearing to 4.56's.

however, i found some 4.30's on craigslist, $75 for the front ifs third member and rear pumpkin (1/2 pumpkin i guess). $75 for the whole setup only requiring installation which i'll attempt is pretty good. by my logic 4.30's will be almost half way inbetween 4.10's and 4.56's...

now i'm second guessing my purchase, wondering if it's even worth the trouble to only upgrade to 4.30's. I know it will be better and the truck is definitely a DD and i will not go bigger than 32's in the near future but again, i'm wondering if i should stick to my original plan of 4.56's and just sack up and fork over some real doe (like 10 times the 75 i spent).

any suggestions? anyone run 4.30s (with a 5spd not auto cause that's stock) with 32's????

really 32's should be ok with stock gearing cuz the trucks, or some of them, came with 31's. i would say throw them in and see wat u think, really not hard to do.

Yeah, DEFINITELY go for the 4.30s!! That's what I did. If that's not enough oomph, when you need new tires again, go down 1/2" to 31s. Plus! If you ever decide to lock the rear, the 4.30 elocker is pretty common.

DId you even notice the 4.10 to 4.30 switch. That's only a 5% difference.

if you run 32's most of the time go with the 4.56 gears, if you run 31's go with the 4.30.

for 75 bucks i would try it, but if your going to regear your diff's i would go 4.56

Are 4.56's easy to come by and cheaper than aftermarket 4.88's?

Even with the 3.0 I would still do 4.88's. As far as the 4.30's for 75 bucks you might as well, I don't see why you wouldn't notice a little difference.

i dont think you will notice much of a difference, but then again $75 isnt terribly expensive.

I think 80% of all Toyota thirds are 4.10 and 4.30, maybe 15% are 4.56 and 5% are 4.88 from the factory. That's my impression from speaking with wreckers.

Thanks for the input guys. DJlarocc- how was your gas mileage after you put in 4.30's?? I have the parts and it'd be a good oportunity to learn about differentials. As soon as I'm done with finals I'd gunna go for it.

Like people said, if its not quite enough I'll just get some 31" m/ts once these tires are toast.

I went from 4.10 to 4.30 with my 22RE/W56. My 4.10 rear was shot, and for whatever reason there were no good/inexpensive 4.10s to be had at the time.
So...ended up with a nice set of 4.30s out of an automatic.

I run 31" BFG ATs and did not notice a difference between the two ratios.
There's an advantage through raw numbers, but not noticeable.
That's all my personal take, my perception might not be as sensitive as others and they might say different.

Unless your current 3rd is about to take a walk, I'd wait until something like the 4.56 to come around.

I've got 31s on my 4runner, and even going from 4.56 to 4.10 I didn't notice much of a difference at all. It's still slow, it's just varying degrees of slow .

Right... it's not going to be worth going from 4.10's to 4.30's!

I wouldn't even bother going with 4.56's. Go directly to 4.88's - it's okay to be a little over-geared, especially with the 22re.

I was able to score an IFS 4.88 front and 8" rear for about 300 bucks including shipping (car-part.com).

Your gas mileage won't be affected as much by the gearing as it will by the weight of the tires. Going from 235/75/15 to 32x11.50x15 is a big difference in weight. That's a lot of inertia. I left the 4.10 gears in so I could put the 235s back on every fall for economy.

I go with 4:30 if you have them. There will be a difference, but it may not be all that noticable. MY 87 with a 22re has 4:10's and 33's. It get 450-500km a tank and does highway speed no problem. A little more power up some of the long hills would be nice, but i also like how it does rev to high when cruising at 100-110km/h
