3vze Power Steering Pump nightmare!
I'm on my 3rd power steering pump and they keep leaking. The last one I had installed I saw it leaking from the back of the pump. Replaced the o-ring on the reservoir and still leaked so I got one from a junk yard. Now 2 days into it its taken about 1 1/4 quarts of ATF (Dexron III) and I'm assuming its leaking? I ended up replacing the return line just to make sure it wasn't it and I replaced the copper washers on the banjo bolt. I can't stand starting it and hear it squeal. You have no idea how irritating it is. Makes me want to crash it into a tree to make it stop
Hopefully someone understands my frustration at this point. Anyway, is there anything I can do to make it stop leaking? Or does anyone have any ideas?
Thanks!

Why do you think one from a yard will work any better:jessica:
Spend the money if you can afford it .
If your sure it is the pump and not else where that is leaking.
Go buy a new one or rebuilt I don`t think they are that expensive about $100.00 or so for peace of mind

ATF doesn't get consumed anywhere in the system; the only way it can get out is to create a huge mess all over the driveway. So get it squeaky clean (the whole steering system), using a tiny bit of degreaser and a garden hose. Then start it and look! (You might need someone to turn the wheel back and forth to run up the pressure in the return line.)
There are lots of places the system can leak that aren't fixed by replacing the pump, e.g., the high pressure line. And yes, the crush washers need to be replaced EVERY TIME you remove the high pressure line.
You report "squealing." If you got enough ATF (or oil, etc.) on the belt, or if the belt wasn't tight enough, that will easily produce a sound that could be called squealing. (The sound of a dry pump is different, but I can't describe how so I would check both.)
Last but not least, Rockauto (for instance) carries rebuilt pumps for less than $60. I'd do that rather than spend the time to go to the junkyard, oh, even once.

Because there is no reason to throw money at it. IMHO you should never have to rebuild a pump. And my friend got a "remanufactured" pump from a parts store and it leaked. I have had remaned master cylinders (2 in a row) leaked. So what does "rebuit" mean?
Anyway, I had it running for approx 20 minutes and didn't drip...had it sitting in a clean shop for about 3 hours and didn't drip anything. I warmed it up and topped it off to the recommended "hot" level and hasn't dripped yet. Maybe it takes more ATF than I think. I did turn the wheels lock to lock approx 10-20 times and never dripped.
Hopefully its fixed.
Thanks anyway
