Hey YT,

The intake elbow on my 88 4Runner 3vz tore and O'reilly and Autozone mentioned the part is now discontinued. Instead of spending $100 at Toyota for a replacement, I decided to take action with some spare material i had lying around the garage.

Here's the original issue:


And here's the end result:




What's everyone think? It's still not complete, since it's missing the crank case feed line but i'll get around to it at a later date when I track down an aluminum fitting to tig into the tubing.

Looks a lot better than the stock piece and the smoother tube should lessen any turbulence the stock piece generates.

Agreed, i'm currently brainstorming how this is going to work with california emissions, but i guess we'll find out.

I'm sure there's an increased airflow factor, for sure. I thought about doing the ISR mod but on the 88 it didn't come with an ISR, and the master cylinder tube is more in the way on the thinner bodied 1st gen.

Except that the stock piece is made that way to flex. The engine vibrates; the air box doesn't.

Let us know if you have any problems at the air box end after a year.

What kind of problems are you predicting? I manufactured the tubing to be a "slip" fit and the silicone coupling provides quite a bit of flex at the throttle body end.

I think Scope missed the coupling !!

I can`t see you have any problems that way

All most all the Turbos run intake piping similar with no problems

Reasonable point it seems like there is a little flex on the connectors he used. How much do these engines move under heavy acceleration?

I was also "assuming" he went with a non air box cone type filter.

As long as the motor mounts are in sub-par condition, they'lll be fine. When designing this intake tube, I made sure the tubing only went in as far as required in order to allow any reasonable flexing. I've put about 40 miles on the setup so far with absolutely no issues. It did make the intake noise more audible, though.

Running directly from the AFM to the throttle is best... Not sure why you'd replace just that portion w/ tube. Before doing any research, I got a dorman portion of that tube for something like $20-30 on amazon when I first purchased my truck as it had a tear similar to your original as well.

ISR removal threads describe using a mandrel bent tube in place of stock intake... In brief, the stock intake setup is very restrictive and nature of the bends places a lot of heat from the exhaust manifolds onto the intake tubing...

Hey RSR,

I definitely appreciate the reminder, but i'm well aware of the benefits of the ISR mod (if any). The reason I did not go with a single piece from the throttle body to the AFM is due to the fact that this 3vz is located in a 1988 4Runner. With that being said, the brake master cylinder dimensions are not nearly as tolerable as they are in the later years. I had a 92 4Runner and did the ISR mod. Also, my 4Runner was never equipped with what is known as an intake silencer, and simply has a factory 90 degree elbow in place of the box. Working with the material that I had, i decided to go this route for a quick, reliable fix.
