3 vze Reman engine, distributor won't fit

Mods if this is in the wrong place please move...Ok, here's the problem...
'90 4Runner, 3vze engine(no 2 it turns out), 175k showing on the odometer, Carfax before I bought it did NOT show the 2nd engine install, it is a jasper according to the stickers all over the car, but Jasper cannot help as to provenance.
The problem is that according to my mechanic, who is replacing the aforementioned Jasper with another reman, the hole for the distributor in the head is too small to allow the previous distributor to go in. Is it possible they had more than one size distributor? Is it possible that engines built for other countries were different? I've spoken with the owner of the reman facility, as has my mechanic, spoken to his shop foreman, nobody has ever heard of this. Anyone else ever have this experience?

I know for 91s, there's two different distributors and one runs terrible, the other works perfectly (pre/post August models). But they both fit...

My guess is that your old distributor is not the actually for 1990 3VZE engine. Any part numbers or identification on the old one?
