3.0L V6 1990 4x4 truck door jam says 10/89 made in japan HEADGASKET COVERED????

hello everyone, I just got a 1990 Toyota 4x4 regular cab v6 5 speed with 55,560 miles on it. It is a two owner rig, which I knew both owners, worked with one and work with the second owner. Anyways that is the background....

I am getting the steering rod replaced at the local dealership on friday and an oil change so they can do the 130 point inspection and tell me what else it needs.

The truck is pretty clean since it sat in his third car garage and he only drove it a few times a year.

I did not see any stickers saying the headgasket has ever been changed on this truck??? Is it still covered on this motor or is it too old??

I am curious since they are doing the safety recall if I can get them to change the headgasket while I got it in there??

Thanks for any advice and help on getting this covered if it needs to be done? Please let me know.... the truck runs fine, but I am concerned with the headgasket on these v6 motors.

thanks, Floyd in Arizona

Also SR5 means what??

Also I wanted to know if you guys can tell me if my truck is a SR5?? It is a regular cab, v6 5 speed manual with 4x4. It has chrome bumpers and door handles. It also has the alloy wheels of the time and manual lockers with the oem bed liner and oem mudflaps. Only thing not stock is the kirkland signature battery, cd player, and 31X10.50R15 Bridgestone duelers on it. I wanted to know if I have an SR5 or is this a base model truck of the year? My coworker said it qualifies for a classic car plate in AZ in about 2 years which might be cool since it is such a clean 1990 toyota.

Hmmm. You're going to be in the dealership on Friday, and you're asking strangers on the internet whether the head gasket has been changed?

There was no sticker on mine saying anything about the headgasket recall. So you need to ask the dealer to look it up. I'd do that well before showing up if you have any hope of getting it done at the same time; they have to make an inquiry back to Toyota USA with your VIN.

Ask them if it is an SR5. Or, if you really want to do it on your own, go to http://www.toyotapartszone.com/ and enter your VIN.

What I'm really asking is if my truck is covered under that service since it was made 10/89 even thought its a 1990. Be nice to know to try and put up some type of fight to get it changed for free.

Model years typically change in late summer/early fall so a 10/89 production date is easily a 90 model year.

Register and set-up your vehicle in this Toyota owners site. It typically gives a service history or work done by Toyota and also if there are any open recalls or service campains

sound right?/ any toyota employees on here?

Hello everyone, ok so my 1990 v6 truck is going in for a steering relay rod replacement at my local toyota dealership.

I called and asked about the headgasket changeout on the 3VZ-E motor and they said 10 years/100,000 miles thats it.....Guess im out of luck since its been over 10 years??

Any toyota employees or owners that know this to be fact?? Would of liked to have my head gasket be changed on Toyota's dime....

Thanks for any info on this subject in advance.....

Within the past 11 (1990 + 10 years minus 2011) there has been more then one person on here that has had their 3.0 engine covered under head gasket recall, if it hasn't been done that recall is still a valid recall and there is no time limit to it. A recall is above and beyond vehicle's original warranty, if in fact that 1990 was covered originally. Better start doing some googling and finding out what model years were covered by that recall. As dealership like to assume stuff because they have absolutely no knowledge how to work their systems. Or are too lazy to do the work so they tell an unknowing customer it doesn't exist, not covered etc etc. There are dealerships that are an exception to this but them telling you 10 year/100k that's it and not actually telling you which ones were covered is just bogus.

Sorry for ranting, I just dislike stupid dealership parts/service counters.

thanks for your help....

I did register on toyotas website and their is no record of the headgasket being changed on my truck. In fact no records at all on this truck.

Only open recall is the steering rod, but I assume it would not list anything in regards to the headgasket since it is such an old service campaign....

The truck only has 50,568 original miles as of today and I am concerned about the headgasket failing on it.....

I did email customer service at toyota, but who knows if I will have any luck??

Does anyone know of a knowledgeable service manager they can ask or of a dealership that could take care of me in Arizona???

steering rod recall

I did schedule the steering rod replacement for friday at Larry Miller since they have the part in stock and they are the closest dealer to me... So at least the safety recall is going to be done...

Someone correct me if I am wrong, but that relay rod recall isn't exactly all that recent. Might be just about as old as the HG recall. But I could be wrong, I never did understand what years were all covered by it so I could be wrong on the age of the recalls.

Also, I am not saying the Dealer is wrong or not, I am just saying I personally don't trust most of them.

Headgasket update

Ok so Toyota corporate got back to me on my headgasket. They did say it only effects manufacture date 1990 to 1995. My truck even though it is a 1990 it was made in 10/89 per the door sticker and they did not have failures due to using a different head gasket material in 89. They changed it in 1990. They also did state in the email that they do post a time limit on the recall for the headgasket of 10 years! So if you guys have a v6 you should get it done before your time is up!

10 year limit doesn't make any sense. 1995 + 10 years = 2005, it's 2011. Somethings not adding up.

??

I know they did the steering rod recall no porblem, but they said it is a safety issue that they have to correct.

The head gasket issue was more of a customer service recall?? I wish someone who worked as a tech could help me out and see if I could get my headgasket changed??

I just don't know who to get a hold of. I logged into the toyota site and only the steering rod recall was active on my vin.

I called both of my local dealerships and they said no, 10 year/100,000 miles

I also emailed customer service and they basically said the same thing.

Did anyone get the headgasket changed recently, like this year?? what did you say or who did you talk to to make it happen??

Thanks everyone... wish I had a 22r sometimes...

Your tuck still has the asbestos head gasket material. Why would you want to change it? That is the material you want for a head gasket.

If it's not broke don't fix it...you already said the truck runs fine.

true :)

I know it runs fine, but I figure it would of been nice to get an updated headgasket put in....maybe I will sell it and a get a 22r so I know I wont have issues in the future. I rather have reliabilty than torque.

Just keep up on maintence and you should be fine

Over change your oil
Change your coolant yearly
Make sure your cooling system is in perfect working order (new thermostat, fan clutch, and all hoses are good)

And if your still worried, put headers on to get rid of the crossover pipe. That holds a lot of heat at the rear of the engine and can cook a head gasket.
