3.0 v6 coolant leak

i just purchased a 1991 4runner 4x4sr5 v6 chrome/rust package they said it had a slow coolant leak so ive been watching it for drips. it finally started dripping from around the lower radiator hose elbow.

im hoping its the elbow seal but was wondering it could be the water pump? the water pump was changed a year ago by PO.

glad its not a blown HG.

edit made no sense confused the thermo housing with the lower radiator house inlet.

You could try to put a q-tip in the water pump seep hole, if comes out dry it isn't the pump.

Unfortunately it leaks water in that area when the pump seals go out.
Been there.....

so plan on changing the water pump. the timingbelt should be new but if it looks bad ill change it.

do you put gasket maker on the block and the pump with the gasket in the middle?

Use Toyta FIPG for gasket. Some OEM water pumps come with a rigid rubber gasket, though. That's what mine had.

BTW, go OEM for longevity....

...and OEM is Aisin/ASCO. autohausaz.com usually has the best price and offers free ground ship (or discounted faster ship) on orders over $50. (no affiliation, but I've had excellent luck with them over the years). Be careful to order the right pump; engines with oil coolers (a can on the driver side of the block, aft of the oil filter) have a nipple coming off the pump in the t-stat area; engines without the cooler need a pump without that fitting.

Clean the block mating surface well by scraping any old gasket carefully (ie, don't scratch the block) and then I usually finish up by wire brushing and brake cleaner.

The Aisin pump comes with a strange metal gasket with thin cured beads of black fipg on each side. I added a thin bead of fresh toyota black to the outside (side away from the water) of the cured bead on each side of the gasket when I installed a fresh pump last year and (knock wood!) no leaks yet...

Be careful not to overtorque the pump. Spec is 13 and 14 ft lbs (depending on which bolt) which is not much force.

The Aisin (and most other pumps for that matter) comes with a fresh o-ring for the t-stat. Use ONLY that to seal the t-stat and t-stat housing. I've seen aftermarket fiber gaskets for the housing but never use them as they stand the outlet cover further out, where it won't compress the o-ring adequately. The o-ring is the seal. Always use the OEM thermostat, which is a Kuzeh - autohausaz also carries that. On the 3vze, position the jiggle valve at the top (12 o'clock position).

Use Toyota Red coolant to protect the water pump seal; conventional Prestone Green has silicates which are slightly abrasive and will shorten pump seal life as compared to Toyota Red. This thread has tips on capacities and filling:

i have a napa pump and t-stat. i will get pics later. i have an oil cooler and have the right pump. i bought a brand new torque wrench so i dont have to borrow anymore and a hanes repair manual. which is good because it covers my 84 2wd pickup too. unfortunately i dont think they sell toyota red antifreeve here.

so basically thanks for the great tips and if this doesnt go well i know why.(napa parts) will probably do this tomorrow evening.

any pics anyone wants tto add to their writeups or for reference?
