6 days ago I picked up an '88 SR5 pickup, Xtra Cab, 4wd, 5-spd, Camper top AND a 3VZ-E that was re-built in October (so they say). New brakes, new clutch...and about 156,xxx miles.

The thing was, the rear cam seal on the left (passenger side) had a leak - I drove it about 400 miles home (bought it on vacation) without a hitch, just kept the oil up every 100 miles or so. It cruised like a champ - no complaints at all.

Here's the deal: I was able to get the old seal out (have a good technique if anyone's interested), but botched the install of the new seal...as there was only about 3" of clearance back there, and I got the big hands.

So, being a noob, I looked into the threads on this procedure. I decided to "do the right thing" and pull the plenum/throttle body, and get at the seal right. HERE'S MY QUESTION: All you guys with experience - what should I do while I've got this thing pulled apart? I've got a second rear cam seal, and I'm thinking that I at least need a plenum/manifold seal...what else while I'm in the neighborhood?

This is my second 'Yota. I had a '96 T100, had to sell - but it was AWESOME. I've done tranny swaps, suspension work, brakes, lift kits, and interior stuff - but I'm pretty new to intake/top end procedures on these things.

Do yourself a favor and pull the plenum and the valve cover. remove the rear cam cap and pull the old plug out and slide the new plug in. Re torque the cam cap to 12ft/lb. While you are down that far it would be a good idea to replace the other side and check your valve clearances. 3.0's tighten valves and burn exhaust valves regularly

I've got the plenum off, and think that I've got the hoses ready to be re-sorted out...

I'm going to try and snag a plenum gasket from the dealership tomorrow. Any tips on the best prep for that seal? Hell, prep tips for the covers and VC gaskets?

I'm all ears folks - every little bit helps!

BTW - what sort of clearance should I look for?

Set your exhaust valve clearances at .012-.013. No less than that. Set your intakes at .009-.011.

Just take your time and go slow so you dont make any mistakes and overlook anything
