3.0 Surging 1800-2400 rpm

Before everyone says it... yes it did search this issue multiple times....

So i got this truck with a blown clutch... had been sittin close to a year. When it first got it going i didn't really notice it but after about 500 miles i noticed it would start surging at light throttle (between maybe 1/4 and 1/2 throttle) when between 1800 and 2400 rpm. Along with clutch i did fuel filter, air filter, t-stat, all fluids, cleaned maf and the normal stuff.... Once i noticed this surging i went ahead and did the plugs, cap, rotor, wires, timing and it seemed to go away for a while but now its back again worse than ever. I've since checked plugs and timing and everything still looks brand new.

Couple notes about this problem:

If i give it more than 1/2 throttle when it starts to surge it will lessen up and if i floor it it will smooth out completely.

Seems to do it worse when cold.

Its a fast surge.. like maybe twice per second.

No sound difference... only noticeable in feel.

Runs perfect otherwise... no rough idle or sputters/misses.

My money is on your TPS (throttle position sensor) needing calibrating.

I had a surge problem, when I burped the air pocket out of the coolant it went away. It may also be a filthy intake routing and throttle body, or TPS out of adjustment or bad, or a vacuum leak.

i've checked vac leaks... i'll take a look at intake routing later today. can anyone point me in the direction of a good tutorial for recalibrating the tps?

those are all good suggestions. i would also seafoam the vacuum lines. especially since it has been sitting a year

The calibration procedure in the fsm is best. The Haynes manual has it too but isn't the same as the fsm. I always go with the fsm. It involves two different feeler gauges and a multimeter iirc. I haven't seen any other tutorials out there.
