3.0 Blown Headgasket - ???

I hope this is the correct section of the forums to post in...

I have a 91 Pickup EXT Cab with a blown head gasket. (surprise, surprise...)
I recently had a shop do a complete rebuild. After them having it for months and months I finally had threatened them and got it back. I've had it back for a couple months and maybe put 1,000 miles on it. The next thing you know, the head gasket blew. Now the shop is out of business. lol. Go figure. I don't really want to put another penny into this thing considering it has been a $ pit. I don't want to part it out either, cause I'd rather spend my time and $ working on the 85 4runner I am picking up today. Here is a list of parts it has:

New Pistons, Rings, Resurfaced Heads, etc..
4.88 OEM Gears
Detroit EZ locker in the front.
Custom rear bumper
3" Rancho lift
32x11.50 BFG KO All-Terrains with 90% tread
Interior is decent, except for the driver's side seat, which is beat.

I am located in CA. I was wondering if you guys have any idea what a good starting point to ask for it is? I mean, is it even worth trying to sell or should I take the tires off and junk it?

Thanks!
Dave

UPDATE!: Someone broke out the driver side extended cab pop out window this morning. Anyone know of a place to get one online? I called the local wrecking yards, and no one has one.

...I thought about it, but from what I've read, it's a real pain. I just bought an 85 runner, and I'd much rather spend my time working on it. I'm pretty proficient at working on vehicles, but I'm not sure if it's out of my scope or not...Thanks for the advice though!

Head gaskets are not that hard to replace, if you are mechanically inclined. Just time consuming. I would wager that the shop that did the work, did not use a good HG, hence the failure. If they did the machine work on the head, then repairing it is not that bad. You can have it fixed in less than a day. You will get more out of it repaired than in dis-repair.

Unfortunatly with a "blown Headgasket" they are barely worth $500. Just look at any given time on Craigslist.. Dont give it to a junkyard though either, If you want to get rid of it, someone on this board would probley take over the challenge, myself included..

The MOST i've ever paid in the 5 I've fixed was $400... and it was flawless.... so flawless I kept it.

Fix it, sell it, make a nice profit. It's not that hard. Pleanty of good info on this forum

Did a couple searches, didn't really turn up what I was looking for...
Has anyone done a walkthrough on a HG job on the 3vze?
The timing belt one on here was great, really made that job easy.

Seriously. It's not hard. My fiance could probably do it without my help and she's a kindergarten teacher. I've done 4 and 1 total engine swap. The 1st one took the longest.... 3 days and a six pack. The 2nd and 3rd took 2 days, 4th one took 6 hours, but we had replacement heads for it.

Here are some threads.

Oh yeah, download the FSM.

I agree its not that hard, just a little time consuming, If the heads are still in good shape honestly you're looking at a good weekends job. The Factory Service manual has STEP BY STEP instructions on how to do it. Here's the link http://www.ncttora.com/fsm/1990-1995...e/cylinder.pdf You can buy a good head gasket kit from engine builder out of Oregon, make sure you buy new HeadBolts too, because they are one time use only.

Probly looking at $250 and 25 hours to save your truck.

My Toyota guru said for a HG job, it could be $500 in parts...
Where are you getting $250 from?
Not saying you're wrong, just wondering what you're reusing, and what he would replace inside of that cost.

Um, most of mine have been around $170. Deck the heads, and a HG kit...

Knock sensor... idk what else.

Here's another link to the prices...http://www.engnbldr.com/toyota_30_v6.htm

Head gasket set about $130 shipped. New head bolt set about $50 shipped. New Timing belt and water pump since your down in dirty that far about another $70...About $250 in parts...Keep in mind thats just for parts, most machine shops will check the heads for cheap, but if they need any valve job or remachining, thats extra..

Thanks for the advice guys! Sounds like I might give it a try one of these weekends. I hope I don't need to get another valve job done, considering it was just done less than 1000 miles ago. I just had the heads and block resurfaced too. They should be in decent shape. Thanks for the links!
