Any major info that I need to know? Such as the tranny bolting up? The truck I'm looking at now is a 93 Ext cab 3.0 automatic 4wd with what I believe is a serious rod knock. I'm not a big fan of the 3.0 and if the 22re will drop in relatively easy to replace the 3.0, I will probably go get it.
Just thought I'd check here before dropping the cash to go get it. I'd like to know if it's worth it for me or if I should just continue to look for a 4 banger truck.

I'm a newbie, but I've read the trans(s) are different and the 22RE will not bolt up. I like the v6, but it has issues with head-gaskets that are very expensive to cure permanently (headers specifically are $$$)

Yeah I know all about the "side effects" of owning the 3.0 from reading about them over the years, which is why I do not prefer one myself. I have always had the 22r and 22re in my past 4wds and would always prefer to stick with them for reliability.
The only v6 Toyota I have ever had is my current '01 5VZ and it's been great, but I believe that Toyota had finally worked out all of the bugs from the 3.0 when moving to the 3.4.
Speaking of that, does anyone know if the 3.4 would be a drop in in place of that old 3.0? Curious.
I'm not even sure how much I would be looking at trying to get a 3.4 to put in there. I may as well just drop in a smallblock Chevy. I've done that before, and simplicity is the greatest advantage there. Certainly not fuel mileage. Lol

TOOOO many wiring differences.
you would need to relocate the engine mounts, meaning, structural welding.

5vzfe swap would be better.

Plus: 5vzfe > 22re

drive lines are diffrent to and i have heard good things about the 3.4 swap seems like something id consider but my 22re is just fine with me for know

I think if I were to go towards the 3.4 swap, considering just the cost of finding a good 3.4, I would probably just grab a mild smallblock Chevy and stuff in it. I considered the 22RE just for simple efficiency and reliability, but since it would not be a simple process, I'd just go SBC and keep it simple. However, the A/T adapter housing, the Jeep converter, and the rumored electronic shift problems, kind of kill that notion as well.
I think I'll pass on this truck entirely. Seems alot of others have been passing on it as well considering it's still for sale for only $750 with a knocking 3.blow.
If I get the price knocked down any lower, I may just pick it up to chop it up into a buggy with a complete Chevy drivetrain swap, engine to axles. We shall see.

Don't go chevy. Keep it yota. Only non-yota engine I would swap would be a diesel. Go 3.4 swap

Admiral ackbar would say "IT'S A TRAP!!!!" Seriously though, don't bother. Apart from the crazy amount of work it would take to make the swap, i don't think it would be worth it. After having owning both (and this is apparently heresy on this site) at this point i prefer the 3vze. Maybe if my 22re didn't have any problems it would be different, but my 3.0 had 250k original miles and ZERO problems. Gas mileage between it and my current 2.4 is about the same since my foot has to be pretty much to the floor on the freeway. Although the 3.0 IS comparatively slow, the 2.4 is frankly pathetic. At least mine is. I'd stick with the 3.0, or if you're feeling rich the 3.4 swap, as others have suggested. 3.4 swap would probably be comparable in cost to a 2.4 swap due to not having to buy a transmission.
