2nd gen runner rear axle link broke!!! how important???
ok i was wheeling this morning and broke this(see pix) off my axle
how important is it??? what does it do??? i assume that it needs to be rewelded asap because toyota put it there but i dont have a welder and wont be able to borrow one for like 2 weeks so i probably wanna put wheeling on hold till then right??? is it ok for the time being if i leave it broke and still drive it casually???

its not the worst thing that could happen... the PO broke mine and i didnt realise if for a year... mine even had rust on where it WAS welded...
id say take it by an exhaust shop and have them weld it... shouldnt be more than 10 bucks and 5 mins of work...
and for 4wheeling, it should be fine as long as you dont do anything crazy and have the rear axle twisting sideways...

ok thanks but i wont take it to the local shop (maybe i will try and find another shop?!?!) my gf just got a cat put on at the local shop and the weld looks like junk and is all pitted she called the shop and they said they "had to weld it that ugly so it wouldnt fall off because catalytic converters are soft" ??? and that it wont rust because they "welded it with a non-rusting solder" hmmm anyway from what you said think i can wait till i can get ahold of a welder thanks

Happens all the time... Mine, TC's - many others... I couldn't weld mine right away, so I ran a 3500lb ratchet stap around it and snugged it up for a while... It's welded now - good and snug...

thanks 91 thats a good idea i will cinch it down for now.... why does it break?? design problem or were our trucks just not made for the abuse we put them through??? hahaha oh well

So with it broken, you kinda changed from a 4link to a 3 link. The problem would be if you broke the other side (and now there's twice as much force on it) you would have NO control over the rotation of the axle and would probably break your pinion. If you broke the panhard bar, you would not have any control over the side-to-side location of the axle. I would not 'wheel it until it was fixed, but it's probably OK to drive easy on the street.
It was my lower mount that ripped off the frame. So I scrapped it all and built a custom triangulated 4 link under there instead.

Do you think it would be worthwhile to gusset the control rod tower even if there isn't any cracking or rusting happening? The PO of my passenger side doors (replacements) kept tearing off the tower, but he had a wacked out lift that extended the tower by 6".

this is the second time its come off the first time i ran it to my buddy who welded it back on for me this time i might add a gusset or 2 thats not a bad idea hadn't thought of that but it couldn't hurt anything

That's why I ended up redoing mine completely ... 1/4" thick brackets, 2" diameter 1/4" wall lowers, 1.75" x.120 wall uppers, 2.5" johnny joints on both ends, beefy axle truss ... suffice it to say if it breaks now, I got WAYYYY bigger problems to worry about!
If you wanted to go a little further, you could truss the axle with this:

and cut down and relocate the uppers on top of it. You want to keep the height over the axle centerline the same as stock though.

i've broken mine twice. got the first side (passenger) gusseted.
just broke this one the other day :
got a hole in the axle housing. good times. gonna get this one fixed the same way for now, until i can swap to leaf springs. i drove on it last time with a ratchet strap with no problems, this one i'm gonna plug the hole with some silicone and strap it so i can drive it to the repair shop
you'll be fine.
