What type of transmission do u have? u need a R type, R150's were the stock ones behind the 3.slows. They should have the belhousing u need already on them. bad idea to run a g or w series behind the 3.0. other parts u need- clutch/brake pedal assembly, clutch pedal, clutch master cyl, hard line from master cyl, rubber flex line to slave cyl, slave cyl, flywheel, clutch, throwout bearing, pilot bearing, shifter boots and interior trim, assortment of wires to run to the clutch pedal for neutral start switch/ back up lights, 80w 90 gear oil, dot3 brake fluid, flywheel bolts, clutch pressure plate bolts, transmission mount and crossmember, driveshafts are different length (longer for manuals) and more that i am forgetting at the moment

we all have our reasons here are some of mine
1. its funner
2. many will argue its better control
3. i had the tranny out anyways
4. i paid 200 bucks for it and it has 37k on it
5. not sure how a auto would hold up to more power
6. i can do a sbc swap later if i want to with the 5 spd
7. im 17 years old and manual is way funner
8. like i said im 17 haha

i swapped my auto for a manual. one of the best mods imo...
auto trans cost more to fix lol. and i spent over $1100 to fix it and it still didnt work :S hard to find a good auto trans mechanic where im from.
all in all, it's an easy job. i mean really easy. every thing just bolts right up, with the exception of the whole you have to drill for the master cylinder and the new cross member. although there is a guide if you have the pedal assembly for the master... i think i have a pic of the hole i did...ill post a pic when i get home tonight.....for the drive shaft, i didnt have to extend because of the dual t/c i had installed.
i say do it. slave cylinder was cheap(napa) and the master cylinder i got from a junk yard....

there's a few threads on here for the swap. just use " auto manual swap as keywords and I'm sure u'll find some. one more thing- if the runner u got has ADD u will have to bypass it and put manual lockout hubs on it. Its a pita to figure out that wiring and not worth it to keep anyways IMOP

I have done the swap on my 1990 4Runner. I shed over 200 lbs, gained over 2 miles per gallon and have much better control and reliability.
I am now going to do it to my 1998 4Runner Limited. I feel this project may be a bit more daunting.

i know this doesnt apply to most of you... but i planned to do the manual swap since my auto trans went kaput...
A local trans shop said if i were to swap from auto to manual my truck would not pass smog (california btw)
Can anyone tell me wtf the transmission could have to do w emmision system? if any? maybe he just wanted me to rebuild the auto?
anyone have any thoughts on this?

More info on Auto to Manual trans swap!
Hey calipatient,
I did do my swap because I lost a gear in my automatic. Back in late 2003 when this happened, I could an automatic used for $1500 or a 5-Speed and transfer case for $450. It became more economically viable for me at that time to swap to a 5-Speed since I was in school. The benefits were realized post swap.
The transmission swap would have no direct affect on the emission system, but California may have a policy in place to declare a major conversion on a car and a smog station official may fail a visual test because of it. Always double check with CARB (California Air Resource Board) before doing any swap. http://www.arb.ca.gov/homepage.htm.
I was in Southern California when I did mine and had no issues on one smog test, but the car now resides in Nevada where smog is not so scrutinized. Things may have changed since that smog in 2004.
I hope this has helped.

6sp manual swap
Hey there, I have a 2nd with a 3.slow 5sp manual with no issues but every time I’m driving 75 and the rpms are at 3000 I wish I could just grab one more gear. I know the 2006 tundras with the 1grfe came with a 6sp manual. Does anyone know how hard it would be to swap one in? Has anyone done it? I know I would probably need a new drive shaft and I’m guessing some kind of adapter plate for the trans to the 3.slow I would love to hear your thoughts!!
