I'm a little new to toyota, just got my first pickup on the road. The truck is 1993, 22re, 5 speed, 4x4. At 55 miles an hour the engine is turning 2500 rpm. I was just wondering if this was normal.

No. On the road, a normal 1993 would be going 65-75 mph.

That's normal, assuming you're running stock size tires. These trucks are just geared that way. They lack power, so higher rpms help them keep up. I.e. More gear reduction, higher rpms.

Alright, thanks for the input. I might hook up the GPS and see what it says speed-wise. My mom followed me home and said she was doing 60 and I was walking away from her. My speed stayed between 55 and 60

Well that's a little different. That will only tell you the accuracy of your speedometer gear. I'm assuming your truck uses a mechanical speedo gear and not electric. It goes on the base of the input shaft and is splined to tell you the speed for stock tires. I have about a size or two above stock and my speedo is still close to accurate, but they're all a little off. Your moms car isn't perfect either. It's just really really close. What size are your tires anyway?

Then everything's normal. That's the size I run too. If your speedo was super accurate, you're now really going a little faster than your speedo tells you. All normal though.

Alright thanks for input, and the attached picture here is why my mom had to follow me home. Upper radiator hose crapped out and she had to bring me some coolant

You'll need to check your door for the "A/TM" code (Axle/transmission).

Translate the Axle code, via info here

Then goto one of the gear calculator web pages, like this one, and input all the info.

With my transmission and gear ratio and your tires I'd be reving 1860 @ 55 in 5th. Or a little over 70mph at just under 2500rpm.

Definately check your speedo vs the gps, speeding with an inaccurate gauge just gets you two tickets instead of one
