22rte to w56???

22RTE engine to W56 tranny. I know it is posable and that you need to use the W56 clutch, but what I also heard I might need a different flywheel, another guy told me I had to use a different throwout bearing? if someone could just tell me what parts I need that would be great
Also does anyone know if the w56 tranny and t-case will bolt right into where my auto tranny was (probley not) or will I have to fab my own mounts and crossmember I just want to know what im getting into before I tear it out in my garage. Thanks

Turbo clutches are the larger 9 1/4" clutches V6's used...

While YOU CAN use a standard 8 7/8ths clutch, I'm guessing it'd be wiser to do the larger...

Then there's clutch material. I've never seen any "Turbo" clutch with standard material. It's always been organic... Not sure why, but I also don't care to know at this point.

If it was me, I'd source a RTE flywheel and maybe a pressure plate.

I'll almost bet the pressure plates are the same ones used on V6 trucks, so (to me) that makes the actual clutch disk the hardest thing to acquire...

But call around 1st and see if you can find an AISIN before you bight the bullet on prolly what's a $150-$250 clutch DISC at the dealer.

Again, the pressure plate and T.O bearing should cross with a V6.


As to the AT to MT swap, search... And I'm pretty sure you'll have to use the 5 speed's X member.

The details should be easy enough to find.

22RE and 22RE-T have compatible parts

A W56 will bolt to a 22re-t with zero issues even with a 22re clutch and flywheel on it, and vise versa a 22re will bolt to a r151 (turbo trans) with zero issues including if you have a stock 22ret clutch on it.

Toyota did not re-invent the wheel on this one, and NO THE 22RE-T DOES NOT USE A 3VZE CLUTCH, Toyota designed a larger clutch for the 22RE-T and uses this clutch behind the 2RZ-FE as well.

There are ZERO issues with using the clutches, flywheels interchangeably.

Pilot Bearings and Throwout (Release) Bearings should be used as motor specific as there is one for the 22RE and 22RE-T and there is one for the 2RZ-FE.

Pieces of the 3RZ-FE clutch could work with the 2RZ-FE, 22RE, and 22RE-T but the entire clutch kit is not specified as being compatible.

AFAIK, the flywheel and clutch is different between the W56 and R151. So that stuff will have to match your trans. But I know it'll be swappable as far as the engine is concerned. I dropped a 22RE in my turbo 4Runner, unbolted it from a W56, pulled the clutch/flywheel off, bolted the torque converter on it, and bolted it to the A340. Only hiccup, was the plate on the back of the 22RE didn't have the access hole to get at the torque converter bolts....had to pull everything back out. But it won't make any difference with a Manual.
