My 88 runner jumped time while driving and ive replaced timing. I did not do the head. Yet. Info on where im @ now. Everything back together and started up after a little fuss. I did not set the time with a light. After start up it had a ticking under valve cover. So I did a valve adjustment to 8 and 12 while warm and the ticking got quieter but still noticable. 1 of the exhaust lobes is very shiny like it has been polished. Also when I went back in to do the valve adjustment the top dimple at tdc my crank mark was about an inch to the left of center. I was lined up properly during rubuild. It seemed to run ok but I don't like the ticking sound. My question is what should I do next?

Shiny cam lobes are ok as long as they are very smooth and not rough. Possibly bent a valve if the timing jumped. All though I'm not sure how a 22re can jump time with a timing chain?
It is possible for the outer part of the crank pulley to move when the rubber that holds it together goes bad. Confirm the top dead cent mark on the pulley matches with the #1 cylinder at TDC, use a pencil or straw to confirm TDC.

The machine shop I use charges $30 just to see if the head is good and will need anywork. I will spend up to $75 for minor repair and then I just get a new head. Anytime you pull the head, it should be checked by a shop. Corrosion in the water jackets, warped head, and hairline cracks are just a few of the things I can think of right off that can be hard to detect.

The shiney lobe looks good to me but a picture can still hide several things. If the lifter arms were adjusted to tight, I have seen them wear into the cam and have walls on the cam lobe. Then you would need to replace the camshaft if that was the case. I dont see the wall so feel you are good.

Without knowing the miles and history of the truck, not sure about ordering a new head.

Ask some of your local part store guys who is the best 22 mechanic they know of. They deal with mechanics all the time and should know. Cant really give any suggestions without seeing it and just what you have mentioned. If it was me and you had the head off, I would be pulling it and sending it to the machine shop but you may luck out and not need to do that.

I have seen a Crank Shaft Pulley that did let the dimple move and if that is the case, you are going to need to replace the pulley. Rare but it does happen. Always set the timing with a light. Timing lights are cheap and used quite often.
