22re unreal amount of power

Don't be fooled by the title, and Yes, I searched, and read...a lot. But, like many others, my 22re has nothing. 252k miles, recent timing chain, cam, (from engnbldr, who is awesome) redone head and such. Put it back together, went through starting issues (took starter apart, internals are fine, so am picking up a Hot Shot Relay tomorrow) It starts sometimes, so hopefully this will fix starter issue.

When it runs, it won't idle when cold, runs when given gas, but when it warms up, runs and idles fine. Then put it in gear, 1st gear is fine. 2nd gear is fine. 3rd gear has no power. Even on flat road, doesn't want to accelerate in 3rd gear. Will accelerate when going down hill, and can even get it into 5th, but can't even hold 5th on flat land.

Timing is set 5*, adjusted valves (still some valve noise), am pretty sure that all vacuums are correct (although I do hear what sounds to be a vacuum leak somewhere.......can't trace it though). No CEL on, and does work, when I pull out MAF it comes on, then kills engine.

So, next will come K&N intake, then header on back exhaust, hoping to get some more air flowing, and power from the engine. Then we can go for lift, bigger tires, armor, etc.....

Don't really know why I posted, or what I am looking for, because I have pretty much made up my mind. But if I missed something that I can check to help with the power, or any suggestions they would be freely accepted. And if anyone is interested I will post when I can about impact of intake and exhaust.

Bye for now.

That was such a scatter brained posting I don't know where to start, but I will try.

It sounds to me like your timing is off...maybe not your cam timing, but your ignition timing. Get your truck running right before you add other stuff...they will only add to your problem of no power.

Title should read "nonreal amount of power."

How's your compression?

Good idea about the timing: check if your distributor is off by a tooth.

I thought he was gonna post something about buying a new truck for cheap and after driving it home, discovered the motor was supercharged and bored to 2.6L!

Check your IACV. I had the same problem when I bought my current 4Runner. Pulled it, adjusted, then idled too high. Pulled and adjusted again, but halfway this time. I now get 1500 rpm on cold startup and 700 rpms when it hits warm idle.

A few things I'd check using the FSM:

TPS setting, Engine coolant temperature sensor, O2 sensor feedback, Air Flow meter, plugs, wires, cap, rotor. Make sure your mechanical timing is correct by checking that the cam gear notch is at 12 o'clock position when #1 is at TDC.

My vote is for either the distributor off a tooth or the chain off a tooth.

Check the main tube that runs to your MASS AIR FLOW/ air cleaner make sure no air leaks
and its tight on the intake.. , i would clean the battery posts and look at the ground wire on motor to fire wall make sure its grounded well..check plug wires and cap..i would even have peek at the fuel filter.. tap the tank with a 2X4 hard if any increased power after hitting the tank the fuel pump is on its way out..

After looking at the MAF and air cleaner, with it taken apart, I decided to do the deckplate mod...took out tube and corner light plastic piece. Now have a loud clicking sound coming from airbox and engine still having same issues...
Any ideas?

I had a car once with a really plugged up cat, did the same sorta thing...after you check the timing and so on, you might have a look at that.

EDIT: just read your OP more carefully, I'd have to say I'm leaning more toward your cam or distributor timing being wonky, given that this is happening after you've had the top end apart.
