22RE turns over, but won't start..... where to start (no pun intended)
Here is the background:
- swapped out the bracket that holds the fuel pump in the gas tank (old one had rusty pipes)
- switched out the box (rusted out)
- been driving it a little each day for 3 or 4 days, slow idle, but always started and would run fine.
- had my mechanic check my timing chain and cap/rotor a day a go... everything was good
- truck / engine has 242,000 km (approx 150,000 miles)
Droven the truck on the highway this morning, everything fine. Stopped at a friends house and then when to start it, and ... it turns over seems to catch at the begining but will not go.
I though maybe the fuel line was plugged, but I checked by undoing a join I had within about 1 foot of the tank and it pumped fuel when i had a friend turn it over. No fuel filter in the line that I could see.
I pulled a plug, and it was a nice light shade of tan/brown. It did not seem to have any fuel on it for all the pumping or turning over.
Please help, not sure what to do with this fuel injected engine. I am used to working on carb'd ones.
Thanks in advance and sorry for the long ramble.....

Do you have spark? The fuel filter on a 22re is located under the intake manifold next to and above the oil filter. If the fuel pump is working then the injectors might not be firing.

Pull the spark plug from the 1st chamber, have someone try and start your truck, and check for spark. Not hard to do. I think you are just overthinking it

The best way to test for spark is with a spark tester but if you dont have one you could pull the plug and look for spark while cranking the engine but it may be hard if your working by yourself.

To test for the injectors firing you need a noid light. Some parts stores rent these tools. You unhook the injector wires and hook up the noid light then turn the motor over, if the injectors are firing the noid light will flash.

If you have never replaced the fuel filter, i recomend that you do it as soon as possible. I also had the same problem that your having, my 86 4Runner was running good and then it just wouldn`t start, checked everything i could think of and still nothing, i was getting spark and fuel but not start, as a long shot i tryed a spare solenoid resistor that i had and my 4Runner fire right up. Ive never heard anyone on here saying that there solenoid resistor has gone bad before, but i guess there is a first time for everything.

cheaper way to test the injectors, get a long flat head screwdriver put the flat head on the injector, and the handle on your ear.. you should hear it tick........ compare it with the other injectors.

Thanks for the input. But where is the solienoid resistor found on this truck. And is there a way to test it. I could buy one, but it will probably have to be shipped in (like everything else)
cheers

The solenoid resistor is mounted on the passenger side fender its grey with fins molded into it and has two plugs comming out of it. I have no idea how you would test it, i just had a spare laying around and just for the heck of it decided to try it and i got lucky and my truck started.

Anyone have a picture of the fuel filter on the 86 toyota. I looked under the truck by the oil filter, and I just don't see it. (maybe it is the beer filled glasses I still have on from last night
Second what is the difference between the EFI relay and the solenoid resistor. (or are they the same)
I will be heading back out to the truck shortly.
Thanks for all the input so far.

Ok... I found the fuel filter. Looks alot different than I thought it would. The manual I have states that you have to remove the starter to get it out, any advice on removal.
Should I hear the fuel pump engage once I turn the key?
Thanks

The EFI relay is under the dash I think. The solenoid resistor is a silver box with fins on it located on the passenger side fender near the fuse box. Theres a test for the resistor I will post tonight , I dont have my book with me right now.

You don`t need to remove the starter to change the fuel filter, remove the access panel from the passenger side wheel well and you will be able to see the filter, removing the tire might also help you gain access. If your truck is lifted its even easyer to change, you should be able to change the fuel filter in less than 30 minutes.

UPdate:
- remove the connector on the fuel filter... lots of fuel getting thru
- It seems to have decent spark at the spark plug
- replace the fuse (main relay - round one)
- ..... it still appears to be a fuel issue, not making it to the cylinders. I will check the injectors tonight with the procedure listed above.
Anyother possible problems with fuel not reaching the cylinder?
