22re timing dead on 5btdc - some light backfiring

Hey guys! I did the headgasket all by my self in just two days I am proud of my self. I have no leaks or messes going on but I got number one up to tdc and lined the dizzy up facing one on the cap and she fired right up, and we set the timing with the light and got it dead on 5btdc, but I seem to have some popping and crackling when I let of the accelerator. Do I need to advance or retard the timing to get this out.

I just have one question.......how/why are you trying to set the timing if your TPS situation is in the air? Did you manage to get it adjusted right or something?

I changed the headgasket it on it and had to get it all back together in order to drive it. One thing I do know is when I tried testing the TPS the idle setting was within specs. I did the jumper thing, is not able to be timed then with the TPS suspected of being weird, even if the idle portion of the TPS checks out?

Would you mind rephrasing that last question? I'm not sure what you're asking.

yeah that doesn't make much sense, if you jump the terminals your idle is suppose to go down
