22re Timing

Just trying to time the 22re in my 4runner and not having much luck. It was a 1988 4runner, 22re automatic. Now I swapped in a 5spd and 1986 22re with the 5spd harness. When I put the timing gun on it right now its probably 15 degrees off and if i get it near 0 it starts to die even if i change the idle. I know your supposed to jump the TE1 and E1 terminals while timing so the Ecu doesnt try to change it, but im not really sure how. The older modle trucks have the plugs in fender well near the air box like this http://www.4crawler.com/4x4/CheapTri.../FuelPump1.jpg so my 4runner doesnt have that. And the newer ones have the little diagnosis box on the engine harness itself wich mine doesnt have since its an 86 engine/harness. Any ideas?

The harness has either the diag box or the plug if it is efi. It must. If it has been cut out then you will have to find the wires. Don't know why anyone whould do that......

Without jumping you can't set it properly. You can get it close though buy ear and at idle (700 rpm) it should be 15-20 degrees or so advanced.

Yeah I have it close but its not that great. The plug on the early efi trucks is part of the body harness, so my 88 doesnt have that. The newer ones have the diagnosis box coming of the engine harness that goes into the passenger side of the fire wall, I put an engine/engine harness out of an 86 when I did my swap so it doesnt have the diagnosis box. It wasnt cut out, its just not there anymore, I was hoping someone who has had this problem would chip in with some idea, I stumped and dont feel like cutting open the harness and trying to graph in a diagnosis box in to the 86 harness if there is an easier way.

Oh I see, did not know that it was in the other harness. You will have to track down the pins on the ECU and jump them.

This is for a 93 but may be similar on the older ones. My 88 had the same plug and had the diag box.

Thanks for the help, I was actually already checking out the diagram for the 88, I guess it wouldnt be too hard to jump them right neer the connectors. If the pins are different on the ecm's between manual and automatic I wonder If I should maybe switch in ecm out of a manual, im still using the automatic one, the engine seems to run fine, the check engine light flashes but I just thought that was the timing off(misfiring).

Well I soldered a wire with a male spade connector to the E1 wire, right near the connectors by the ecm, and soldered a wire with a female spade connector the T wire in the same area. I connected them and got the codes stored in my ecm(check engine light has been on since swap) but it didnt help with timing haha. It still like 10-15 degrees advance and get crappier the closer I get to 0. So im gona see now if i have the timing chain on the timing gear in the wrong place, and do some more searching. Any input anyone?
