22RE runs fine when cold or totally warmed up, but terrible during warmup - help

I've got an 88 4Runner w/ 22RE that seems to have trouble running only when its warming up.

When its cold it runs fine, about 1100 RPM, no missing. Also after its totally warmed up, runs fine. Idles around 700-800 RPM, no missing.

However, during warmup after about 1-2 mins of running, it starts to miss, and barely idles around 400-500 RPM and sometimes dies.

This just started happening recently, truck was running perfect before that.

Any ideas?

Use the FSM and check the cold start injector system. Something is off between your csi, timer, coolant temp sensor, and/or idle air control.

Folow the toubleshooting check list, FSM engine section.

Misfire.
#1 is fuel quality, #2 EGR system, #3 spark plugs, #4 ignition, #5 distributor, #6 ECT sensor, #7 compression, #8 VAFM, #9 Injectors, #10 CSI, #11 ECM
Rough idle.
#1 Fuel quality, #2 ECT, #3 EGR, (Not going to type this on all out it goes to atleast 20)

Probably has todo with the EGR BVSV and ECT not reading the same temps, not exactly easy to get to but a cleaning will do wonders for those sensors.

It is only happening during warmup. If it were a egr problem, wouldn't it happen all the time?

So yeah during warm up.

EGR temp-vac switch(BVSV) opens early, EGR and/or electric-VSV sticks when cold.

Easy check would be to pull the vacuum line from the EGR, verify it opens and closes by applying manual vacuum, then monitor the EGR temp sensor to make sure it's closed fully. If it's an EGR system problem it'll do a smooth idle down during warm up and not bog.

PS don't forget the gauge temp sender isn't located with the ECT and EGR BVSV, it may have a different reading than the computer is getting due to location and differing gunk build up.

Thanks for the help!
Seems like the problem is getting worse, now it misses, runs rough after it has totally warmed up. I have to borrow a car for now

I went ahead and measured a bunch of sensors.
The water temp sensor, start injector time switch, egr gas temp (CA only), throttle body, BVSV all were within range.
However, the AFM tracking wiper was not to spec (in the FSM). Spec shows it should range from ~200-1200 ohms, mine was measuring from about 1.5k (that's 1500 ohms) to 3.5k (3500). That's not quite within range.

I assume the reason it runs well when cold is because the EFI system is running in non-closed loop mode?

Starting it up this morning to do work on it, and now its running perfectly. Didn't have any problems warming up. Ugh... Can't stand intermittent problems.

The O2 seems to be working fine, it fluctuates between ~0.007V and ~0.012V about every second.

Will wait for it to cool down again, then try doing some more testing.
