I just rebuilt my motor (22re) on my 87 4runner bored 20 over engnbldr master kit with crawler cam and street/rv head (over size vavles) new injectors. The problem is is that it has no power and feels like its loseing power from about the 4000 rpm range and up. I took it to a guy today who is really good at toyotas and said I need a new throttle bodie because my idle valve is sticking. (also when I hook up the jumper wire to set the timing the idle does not go down which I read is a TPS right?) This thing has no power and I am a little pissed cause of the money and time I put into this thing this past week. It also is getting the worst gas mileage ever it took me almost a quarter tank to go 20 miles today. Please help I am not to good with fuel injection

sounds like hell, but be patient brotha, it will be figured out. the TPS adjustment is a good place to look. who built the motor?

Me and my dad put the motor together everything was triple checked and I have put a couple motors together and he has put together more then he can count. I know everything with the motor part is good

Oh yeah and if I unplug my TPS then there is no change in the running of the motor and the check engine light does not come on from what I understand this means its faulty right

Do you think the rings have seated correctly yet? It took my last 22re a minute to do so (fully rebuilt) then all was well. Keep an eye on oil usage etc. It should come around.

I don't mean to go of topic but every time I read a thread about a new engine everyone says to watch oil consumption while the rings seat. So I can't help but ask...

I agree xylicon, can you imagine all the new cars lined up at the dealership, customers whining about oil consumption on their new cars, and the dealer telling them to be patient it will correct itself. It's a pretty common myth about the ring seating thing, but a properly rebuilt engine shouldn't have excessive oil consumption, if your rebuilder tells you this bull, he's just covering for his shoddy work.

Yes the rings seated no oil usage its got to be somthing with the sensors

I have seen it time and again on this forum and it puzzles me, how can one rebuild an engine, but lack any sort of diagnostic skills when it comes to correcting a problem with said rebuild.

No its not one tooth off timing is pretty much on right now. I have never really been around fuel injection before and just thought if someone was having the same problem they could add in. have not really had the time to check tps yet. Hope I get a chance to this weekend

Pretty much on?? Remember fiel injection is alot me precise than carbs so ur timing needs to be right.. but ive never had a problem out of mine and i would think if u unpluged ur tps that the motor should change if it was functioning correctly

Ok its on then LOL thats what I thought about the TPS I think I have some time to go mess with it.

Oh and it runs good just no power starts idles drives down the road like I said not the power it should have for what is done.

Again, your ignition timing is off...probably by one tooth. No power, especially on the upper RPM rage is a dead give away on this one.

How do you know your ignition timing is correct?

If you rev it up at half throttle then it goes good but if you floor it then it retards the timing and you lose power and its like it has a rev limiter. I just checked the TPS and when I put the feeler gauge in (85 and 57) then there is no reading open throttle and closed are in spec so that means I need a new TPS right? Timing is good just spent some time making sure
