22re motor swap from 89 4x4 to 93 4x4
I have been in the process of rebuilding the motor in my 89 4x4 xtra cab.
This truck has been sitting for about 6 years and needs a lot more work than just the motor.
The motor is rebuilt and ready to be installed but other areas of the truck still need attention like the gas tank, gas lines, brake lines, tires.....
As I was working on this truck, my 93 4x4 decided to mix oil and water through the timing cover. I have seen threads on this site that show in great detail how to replace the timing cover while the engine is still in the truck, but they said it would have been easier to remove the engine to replace the timing cover.
Both engines are 22re
So here is my question to you all
Are the engines between these trucks the same?
Am I able to just install the rebuilt motor from the 89 into the 93?
Seems like this would be the quickest way to get the 93 running again.

For the most part everything from years 89-95 pre Tacoma are interchangeable long as both the trucks have the same transmission (i.e. 5 speed or auto) it should be the same, swap and go. Good luck

Thanks for the reply.
I took a closer look and there are differences on the wire connections and components.
Throttle valve sensors have different connection.
The hose connection from the power steering pump to the throttle body on the 93 is a direct connection. On the 89, it runs from the power steering pump to a component on the side of the intake, then to the throttle body.
The ignition coil and their connectors/wiring is different.
I stopped looking for differences after that.
Looks like I would have to remove the entire wire harness and I'm not sure the wire harnesses are interchangeable. Would hate to make things worse by frying components.
I'll just keep working on the 89 then pull and rebuild the engine on the 93 later.

Hey brianh699, thanks for the reply.
That makes sense, they should be the same.
Started the process of pulling the engine today. Will need to buy a second engine stand, cheep at Harbor Freight.
Hoping to have the engine out tomorrow to begin the swap.
Ill post all the differences with pics here so the next person might get some benefit from it.

Engine swap complete and running! My first rebuild!!!!
Here are the differences I found. Not a lot of differences.
Ill post the pics with the 89 first followed by the 93.
Distributor Connections. I just swapped the distributors:
Throttle Valve Position Sensor. Swapped the Upper Intake.
Cold Start Injector Connector. Swapped the Upper Intake
Oil Pressure Sensor
Temp Sensor
Knock Sensor
Not sure what this is called but there was one on the 89 and not the 93. Solved this by swapping the Upper Intake. Connection to the power steering pump.
Nothing here
Higher shot of the two
Last, there is an extra sensor here. The white one. Not sure what it is for either. I just swapped the whole panel.
Hope this helps the next person wanting to swap similar motors....
