22RE massive oil leak help.

Hi all! I'm new to yotatech and to the Toyota world in gerneral. Just picked up a nice 92 regular cab, 22RE, 5 speed, 4wd, pickup last week. Rear springs were blown and front brakes were shot. Both now repaired/ replaced. Came with two motors, 89 installed in truck and the original 92 freshly rebuilt and out of truck. I plan on putting the 92 back in it this summer, but not until a few mods have been done. My problem is that the 89 motor in it leaks oil like a sieve! Front of the motor and seems to be toward the top. Its not the valve cover gasket, it is below that somewhere. It's flinging oil everywhere and makes the maintenance process awefull. Suggestions on what is leaking, how to fix it, and what else should be done while I am there would be greatly appreciated. I am really enjoying the yotatech site and am learning everyday. Thanks.

Check your front main seal. Its a common place that leaks and flings oil up on the motor. You have to pull off the lower pulley the seal wears a groove on the shaft of the pulley where it slides on the crank. They make a repair sleeve and seal for it.

welcome to yt.... do u know what side and location it is leaking? have u tryed to clean it to get a better idea where it is coming from? the front area could be the front cover or it could be from the front cover and head gasket where they meet. also if u can get some pics of where it might be coming from we can also help tell u more.

It can also be the the timing chain cover. This and the front seal are a bit of a pain to change. If I had a rebuilt I would just put it in before the mods..

My 94 is also a massive leaker. 310K miles and the bottom end is original. Since it has great compression and shows no evidence of burning oil whatsover, it is merely an inconvenience...and I'm careful where I park it. I am pretty sure the leaks come from the front timing cover and the front main seal.

If you are running synthetic oil, as mine is, it will leak worse. But with that many miles I don't see a reason to go to Dino oil now. A positive side effect of the leaking is that at least those componants covered with Mobil 1 are not totally rusted away, like most of the rest of the truck.

A couple of simple places to check though: make sure that your oil pressure gauge and light sending units are not the source. They are simple to replace, and cheap too.

Until you put the new donk in, I'd just embrace the anti-rust nature of the ooze. I jokingly nicknamed mine "Deepwater Horizon."

This looks like the correct problem. Where would I get the repair sleeve? I cleaned the whole motor, concentrating on the front of the motor, and after a couple of short trips this seems to be the problem area. Do you have any suggestions on the repair?

I would check valve cover gasket and seals.

When I first bought my pickup it had massive oil leaks. (1qt a day)

I thought I had a bad rear main seal

just had a very bad valve cover seal & the plug near the back of the engine was chewed up

spent about $20 on a felpro kit, haven't dripped a drop of oil since.

I looked up the part online and fel-pro makes a "harmonic balancer repair sleeve" - is this the right part? Do I also need the seal that goes into the timing cover or does this sleeve take care of that seal? They also sell a tool to install said sleeve for $32 (sleeve is $8) is the tool necessary? Thanks.

I just fixed my major leak from the front of the engine. It was that dang elusive Oil Pump O-ring. It had slipped out of the stupid groove and gotten smashed. So, be prepared to fight with that o ring when you pull off your oil pump. I agree with most, it is much easier to replace the main seal with the oil pump off the truck and on a work bench.

good luck.

OK - I looked at the FSM and it says to pull the oil pan in order to pull the oil pump. I have ordered the repair sleeve and new seal for the front main seal. Do I have to pull the oil pan (or should I)? Do I need to pull the oil pump? How deep do I need ( or should) I go? I don't mind doing this, just trying to avoid more than necessary. I am traditionally a small block Chevy guy and am VERY new to the whole Toyota world. Thanks to all for the help so far.

No, you don't need to pull the oil pan. Unlike the Chevy motor, the Oil pump is externally mounted to the timing cover on our Toyotas. There are 5 bolts holding it onto the timing cover/engine. I think you ought to pull it off the engine and replace the seal on it with it on a work table. I didn't buy a repair sleeve. I just bought a new seal and replaced the old one. Personally, the tool isn't necessary. I took a large socket, that fit the seal and just inside of the oil pump and a rubber mallet and knocked mine into place.

Thanks a ton. Hopefully this cure the "Exxon Valdez" problem in the engine compartment!

Oh and to add, you were asking about taking the oil pan off, all you gotta do is take out two bolts out of the pan, you will see them underneath the pump, dont forget them when doing the repair, good luck man

I only had to take those bolts out if I was removing my Timing Cover, not just my Oil Pump.
