22re knocking under load
Hey guys I searched and could not find an answer to my question. Here it is, My 22re has about 142k on I did the timing chain at 137k.
the noise is a metalic rattling is the best way I can describe it kinda like a timing chain but with more variation in the noise.
The conditions. It only happens when the truck is under load or bogging for power. For example if im in third going at lower rpm and shift to fourth and give it a good amount of gas the range before it hits powerband again it makes the noise and once it hits powerband the noise disappears.
Advancing the timing made the noise decrease or have less of a range to appear with the timing decreased the noise appears in the same but wider range.
any direction greatly appreciated.

RE: 22re knocking under load
I have a 1991 22RE extended cab Toyota pickup, with the same problem. I think you have a bad rod bearing, & the piston is tapping the head. I also thought it was a bad timiong chain. Hope this helps. Dani.

first off this truck is running 5.29s with 33s so maybe I illustrated the wrong picture when I said "bog". I go up hill in 5th on the freeway no problemo .
It is almost impossible to make this truck shudder from under rpm shifting. What I was trying to say was lower rpm or power range (I wish I had a tach I play it all by ear and feel)
Further I retarded the timing and the noise went away (I think I had it backwards in my original post).
The noise I was hearing seemed variable and well.... violent for pinging. Now the truck drags ass with the timing retarded. Im gonna mess with it and see where it starts to make the noise.
++ I hope not rodbearing

well to be honest I dont have a timing light yes there lies one of the problems
EDIT;(and no even tho I don't have a light it was not cranked up to 12 deg or something stupid ).
I think its around 7.5-8.5 currently, its idling normal just with slow pickup.
I dont think it will let me advance without the sound however and im running midgrade fuel at the moment 88 octane?
