22re issues, over my head

Ok guys, I'm getting pretty disheartened. I know that I can't just figure out what is wrong with my 22re. It's reached into that area of diagnosis that I just don't have yet. I'm hoping we can figure this out. I took some pics and a video to help and will describe what I know. If more details are needed or things I should try, just lemme know and I'll get it done.

This is a new short block, new head, new camshaft, new injectors, fuel/oil filter, and plugs.
Everything else is carry over from the old engine.
Before the new engine the truck ran well enough, about 15mpg, slight ticking from the valve cover with a code 21 and 52.

New engine installed and the starting electrical system rewired to stock got the truck running. It even drives. But the engine is not happy. It runs rough and coughs quite a bit. I still have code 21 and 52 and now I also have a code 42 which has never occurred. Can the O2 sensor alone be the main culprit to a whole myriad of issues? I had a leaking exhaust manifold but have since patched that up. I'm just too broke to be throwing parts at this problem and would really like a good solid diagnosis before money.

The pictures are of one sensor on top of my valve cover that I know is part of the vacuum system and is broke. I have never been able to ID it though so maybe someone recognizes it? Also, general engine hook up shots so if anyone sees anything that looks obviously incorrect or going to the wrong place, please let me know. Also is a link to a short youtube video of the engine running at idle and with a slight acceleration. There is a whistle coming from somewhere and a tick tick tick from the valve cover as well as example of the coughing upon giving it gas. I don't mind redoing the entire vacuum system, but I have yet to find a straight forward and accurate vacuum diagram for the 87 22re 5-spd. I appreciate any information or leads. I can take more pics or videos or readings if anyone wants more material. Thanks much.

Jipo

I would start by connecting the one loose end of the blue VSV (one closer to the front of the engine) to the intake so it can get vacuum. That is the fuel pressure regulator vacuum switching valve (VSV). I'll keep comparing my photos with yours.

Heck, even that's a great lead. Thanks much. I tracked down the 88 FSM and it is comparable to the 87 22re as well, correct? I printed it out and went and stripped all the vacuum system parts off of the donor 94 V6. I figure I'll just gut the whole vacuum system and start from scratch, know good and well that everything is as it should be.

'88 and '87 will be similar, not the same though. Much like my '95 is similar, but not the same. Plus, you have A/C where I don't, so some of the hose routings look funky to me.

Code 21 has to do with the O2 sensor, correct? And 52 is knock sensor, I believe.

Code 21 is O2 sensor
Code 52 is your Knock sensor
Code 42 is your Speed sensor

42 should not effect the engine, however the first two will definitely give you power/milage/driveability issues. So check your knock/o2 sensors and wiring.

Engine sounds like a pretty normal 22re to me.

did you do all that? (reffering to the vaccum hoses and electrical wires)

Oh believe me superbleeder, I know. That's how she came to me and it was such a mess without original diagrams that I figured it best to leave it as was since it was running then. But I suppose it's to that point now that the rats nest has made proper diagnosis an issue so I'll just get it all put together like the papers say. Knock sensors themselves are not typically the part the goes out, but rather a failure in wiring somewhere, correct? What about the O2? It's a sensor with less than 2,000 miles on it, but (I know, i know) it was left out in the open environment for some time while I was replacing the block. Or is the wiring more suspect for a code 21? Thanks guys.

You're just going to have to dig out your ohmmeter, test the sensors, and then if needed test the rats nest.

We can speculate, but no point in just guessing.

I was afraid of hearing that. Ok then. So step one: Hi guys, My name is Jipo and I don't know how to use an ohmmeter to take readings. I have a few good multimeters and am really keen on taking voltage readings. But those other 12+ options on the dial are way past me. I'll do the reading myself if someone has a good link to an explanation. Does the FSM have good instructions on how to take ohm readings? Thanks guys.
