22re hesitation/miss

Fresh rebuild 22re in my 1987 4Runner. Been running phenomenal until I hit my 200 mile mark. Yesterday getting into the highway I noticed a hesitation/miss/power loss whatever you wanna consider it. It only happens when I'm getting on the throttle. Seems like it happens in every gear about 3/4 throttle. If I keep it at half throttle it runs great. Up hill it does it the worst. Just complete loss of power sluggish rough feeling.

The truck did sit for 15 years before rebuild happened. And I drained the old gas out, which was pure red and had quite a bit of crud come out.. So is it possible that my new fuel filter is already clogged up? Also put in new fuel pump

Anyone have any ideas? Also idles great! No problem running the throttle up at idle. Only happens when driving

Not getting any codes. Only have been puting premium 92 octane in it.
Plugs and distributor are new. Haven't checked for intake leak so it's possible. Will re adjust TPS and get back to you. Thanks

My problem was similar but a little more violent. Here's what corrected it. Don't know if it's your problem, but it's all easy, free, or cheap to do.

Thanks for the help guys. Still positive its fuel filter. What came out of that gas tank when I drained it was unreal lol.

Brand new ignition set up.
Swapped in ignitor
Tested afm and TPS both checked out
Cleaned TB before I put it on engine
Cleaned and tested EGR.

No luck. Gonna pull fuel filter tonight and if it's the problem I'm gonna drop tank and do a good cleaning and find a product to coat/protect the inside of tank. Seeing as my brand new fuel filter only made it 200 miles lol

maybe fuel pump?

since you only see this at higher throttle, maybe you're not pumping enough fuel? white spark plugs would indicate a lean fuel condition as would high NOx. perhaps it's gunked up by your old gas.

Nailed it happycamper. Well I drained the bad gas before it ever left shop. But the problem lies deeper than bad gas....
Yanked out my fuel filter which I then proceed to dump Orange (rust) gas out of I then knew it was time to clean gas tank.
Pulled out fuel pump first out of curiosity and here is that I found... Keep in mind the fuel pump and filter sock are brand new (200 miles ago)

Now does anyone have any pointer on cleaning and refinishing the inside of a gas tank?? Haha

great!

that'll do it! i always feel better fixing a problem that's known rather than diagnosing a problem that's unknown. at least now you can estimate the time and money required to fix it.

if the inside of the tank is rusting then i would replace the tank rather than trying to fix it. a replacement, even a new OEM tank is very affordable in comparison to the materials and time to try to coat the interior of your tank -- and if you miss a spot, then you'll ruin another expensive pump and other components. OEM tanks are $170; junkyard and aftermarket (eg. Spectra) will be cheaper (more for cold-weather option).

there are three sizes of tanks: 14.5, 17.5, and 19.5 gal -- as best as i can tell these are for, respectively, most pickups, 4runners, and lastly pickups with long bed or xcab depending on the year, perhaps for auto transmission only, it's unclear. of course, in the toyota catalog they'll be listed in liters, not gallons.

they of course vary in their ground clearance. so if you want the most ground clearance, get the smaller tank; conversely you can upgrade your capacity if you need it. the mounts are all the same, however the skid plate and sending units differ in length. i've been considering doing a 19.5 gal tank swap for my 4runner so i did some reading (but found only limited information) -- i normally don't have details like that at my fingertips!

certainly you should also replace the filter (at motor). I'd pull and clean the injectors and flush the fuel lines. i think you can simply disconnect the fuel line at the rail and jump the P+E terminals (or was it F+B?) to get the fuel pump to go. Check the FSM to confirm; my memory fails me.

If the injectors are a bit clogged, you'll have uneven flow and compression. Your motor won't run smoothly because of the imbalance and your fuel economy will suffer. In the long run, it's better to do it right. Injector cleaning doesn't cost much although you'll have to wait a week to get them back. Or to speed things along, you can try cleaning them yourself with a container, solvent, and some jumper leads, although I've never tried. Since you've probably got CHUNKS of rust, i don't think the ultrasonic cleaning is absolutely necessary.

I've not used this but heard Red-Kote works well for lining rusted tanks.

Check your Return lines and the lines on your Fuel Pump Bracket. The long "J" line will most likely be clogged on the bracket. Seen the Fuel Rails have gunk in them as well.

Thank you for the tips!!
Although replacing the gas tank would be ideal, I do not think it is necessary. I'm going to look in to rust removal and finding a good product to coat the inside. I know I'm not the first person to ever in into a rusty gas tank

And yes terrys87, I've already cleaned and blew out all my lines with air compressor think I'm good there. I've got an extra fuel rail I'm going to clean up and swap in. Contemplating on what to do about injectors. I'd like to pick up some new or "rebuilt" ones. But I was really hoping to have her back on the road by Monday!! We shall see

A can of sea foam in the gas tank will clean everything out. I had the same problem. My 4runner sat for 10 years, so there was about 2 or 3 inches of goo stuck to the bottom of my tank, clogging up my fuel pump. A can of sea foam cleaned everything out. Luckily, my tank wasn't rusted. Just make sure you remove the tank and clean it out really well afterwards.

I clean my tanks with white vinegar. It may look like rust in the tank, but when cleaned, you will not see any pitting in the metal. I really think what looks like rust is a chemical build up inside. Definetly looks like rust though. My experience with a rusty tank is where the dirt sits on top and you can poke holes thru the tank.

Cleaning a tank takes a few days. As far as injectors, I clean mine with a 9 volt battery, syringe, fuel cleaner.
