22re Headgasket lifespan

I am wondering how many miles your head gaskets have lasted. I have 190,000 miles on my original gasket. I was recently had a conversation with another individual familiar with 22re engines and he was supprized that my head gasket has lasted that long. This has made me wonder if I am on borrowed time with my gasket.

So I would like to get an idea of how many miles you have gone until you had a head gasket problem. Or, if you have never had a problem, how many miles have you gone on the original gasket?

Thanks.

I had 172,000 miles on mine (22r though), head gasket was fine, but I spun a rod bearing. Maybe your friend has the 3.0 head gasket problems confused with the 22r(re)

Mine was still going strong at 220k before I tore down to replace the timing ass'y, bearings, and rings. The best story I've heard is of an older lady that had over 600k on her 2nd gen 22re pick up. A farm woman. Never had to have any major repairs done to it. Changed oil, coolant, regular tune ups, etc. like clockwork. So, I wouldn't say there's any real definite life span for it. If I were you, I wouldn't worry about it. There's enough other things can go wrong before the headgasket ever fails. Just take care of it.

Mine has 220,000 miles on the origional. No problems so far. Just keep up on the maint. and keep the cooling system in top shape and you will be fine.

The problems I see and hear of are people who neglect their cooling system and overheat the engine. Once the engine is ran hot, the head gasket seems to go POP!

I sold my old 87 4Runner in 2005 with 222,000 on the original head gasket. As far as I know the 22RE isn't really known for blowing head gasket's unless it's abused or overheated like others have said.

'93 p/u- 150K miles- original HG
'88 4runner- 206K miles- original HG
'95 4runner (22re)- 142K miles- HG went at 136K.
I spent under $200 to replace mine. I didnt get any milling done as the head was still in great condition. Took me about 7-8 hours over 3 days to do. First time doing it.
IMO, it should be replaced at the same time you do the timing chain, every 100K-150K miles. I was looking for it on the online FSM, but cant find it. I swear I had read that it was in fact a regular maintenance item like the timing chain, etc.

200k+ before my rebuild. And I think it blew when I shifted into 1st in 4LO going down a hill. Probably hit 7k RPM and there was tons of white smoke. So stupid!
