22RE Gradual loss of power, and then the clutch went soft, and THEN...

I was driving over a mountain pass when I started losing a noticeable amount of acceleration power. At the same time, a whooshing noise was coming from driver side engine compartment and got progressively louder. Also, the oil pressure was steadily rising.

Side note: my oil pressure gauge has been reading zero which I'm not sure but I think is from having put in a light weight oil(5w30) the last time??

Anyhow, the oil pressure went up from zero to 60%. When I reached the top of the pass the clutch pedal was soft and wouldn't engage. After sitting for a few minutes the clutch came back. I kept driving it for a few hours after this happened and the acceleration/power continued to decrease. I can usually go about 30-35mph up this pass but on the way back I started off at 25mph and by the time I reached the top I was crawling at 5mph. Barely made it over.

Again the clutch was soft and this time I wasn't able to get any response out of the gas pedal either - no acceleration or change in rpm's even at idle. The clutch came back after a few minutes and I did manage to get a response out of the gas pedal twice, but very little, nothing above 2000rpm and only in idle.

Thanks in advance for the help!

Red face

You mean your clutch pedal went to the floor??

At any time did you notice your clutch burning smell anything ??

How many miles on your engine??

why you would ever use 5w30 in this engine is beyond my scope of thought

You where looking at the oil pressure gauge??

no reason it should go higher as the oil gets hotter

When was the last time you did a major Tune Up??

That suck when problems like this turn up. How long have you owned the truck? Have you checked compression on the motor? Have you checked your clutch master cylinder for fluid level and fluid quality. It's a good idea to flush clutch and break fluid every once and a while. If not as it wears out it will slowly stop working as well as it should. I have had this problem with disc breaks after 214k miles on a Chevy. I now change all break and clutch fluid at least every 100k miles. A lot of my friends say I'm crazy to wait that long but it still looks ok after that. We're there any funky smells that you noticed? Any info might help us point you in the right direction. Good luck hope this helps.

BTW, if you didn't have your head so far up your tailpipe you would have seen the mileage at the bottom of my post...

He was trying to help. No need to be an ass about it. Without more info or pics it is hard to help.

X2 being rude is a good way to not get help from anyone. You weren't descriptive at all about what was going on with your truck, we can't help if we don't know what's happening.

If oil pressure went up I would suspect the oil pump bypass somehow isnt working or is clogged.

Yea I run 5-30 in winter with no problems. And now that I think about it. My old 85 had a bad oil leak. And if I was down over a quart she would loose a lot of power. Could be a piece of rtv broke free and plugged an oiling hole. Hope not but could be. Also could be oil pump going out.
