Maybe his last air box ran out of air and he doesn't want the new one to use up the air so fast? I hear autozone has a airbox with a lifetime supply of air, guaranteed to never run out.

If you're pinging at idle, there is something SERIOUSLY wrong, and it's not anything to do with the air fuel meter.
Tell us more about the engine's history, and don't spare the details.

It pings when you start moving in first gear untill the rpms get above 1500. The truck had a 22r in it but that blow up. So then i swaped it for 22re efi and rebuilt the motor. If i turn the distributer cap it dosent ping but it losses power because of the timing.

truck is an 86- no T1(TE1)/E1 connectors, per se.
have to short these conectors (circled in light blue):
When you do so with the engine idling, the idle speed should change. If it doesn't you'll have to adjust the throttle position sensor according to the field service manual for your truck, then go back and try to adjust the timing again.
Once everything is okay, adjust the timing AND idle (and maybe timing and idle again, over and over until BOTH meet spec).
