22re or 3.0l v6?

22re or 3.0l v6?

Hey guys

I am planning on buying another Toyota soon i had to get rid of my old one because my girlfriend was complaining about the oil stains in the driveway.
So i had a 22re which was an amazing engine until i had a local shop do a timing job and didn't replace the gasket so it leaked from the timing cover a week later.

Now my question is i want a reliable truck (Toyota) to haul my dirt bikes on the weekend which one would be preferred if you were in my position the 22re or the 3.0l v6?

i'm kinda leaning towards 22re because its a really reliable engine, and i hear the 3.0l v6's were bi-metal engines and have head gasket problems all the time, plus aren't that great on fuel.

but i would like to hear some opinions from some people that have either of these engines. Thanks!

I'd go for 22re.

I personally love the 22r and Re engines. I have had nothing but good luck from all of mine. My DD has the 22R and its never let me down.

My dad has a 95 pickup with the 3.0 and has never had a problem. He has roughly 200,000 miles and still all original. Never replaced anything other then clutch and your basic tuneup stuff.

I'd choose a 22r or Re tho.

After owning both, i think i'd pass on the 22re. Despite being lower powered than modern engines, the 3.0 is a HECK of a lot faster than a 22re. Also runs a lot smoother. Both engines are iron blocks with aluminum heads. 22r/re's have head gasket issues as well. The MPG with a 3.0 won't be as good as a 4 cylinder, but not night and day difference. The extra power is WELL worth it. 3.0 is easily swapped to 3.4, which is much better than either. 3.0 sounds much better. The ONLY advantage i see to the 22re is that it's simple to work on. the 3.0 can be a bit of a pain to get to things. All in all, after owning a 22re for a good while now, i can't understand for the life of me why people like them so much. I've had nothing but bad luck with mine. Just my 2 cents, best of luck making your decision.

Either one is a good engine. I prefer the 22r or 22re due to the ease of maintainance. I used to bash on the 3.0 liter hardcore. I have since realized it was mostly me being a jerk and based of spite more than anything.

There are plenty of people here to help you with either one you choose not matter what the issue.

So...for all the 3.0 guys, I aplogize for bashing your motor.

I've owned both my friend, and honestly it's 6 of one half a dozen the other in my opinion! If I had intentions of hauling or pulling much I'd opt for the 3.0! A ton more power than the 22re, but if I was gonna drive it much the 22re does get much better fuel mileage! I personally own the 3.0 now, sold my 22re about 6 months ago, I love em both! The 3.0 will last forever as long as you don't get it too warm! And their a sob to work that's for sure cause its crammed in that tiny hole lol but the positive side is if you half ass take care of them you don't have to work on them very often! All in all in my honest opinion I like my 3.0 better than the 22re but either are good, strong, dependable engines!

Me I would also think about upgrading to a newer model girlfriend!!

My question is how far and over what kind of roads do you plan to haul your dirt bikes??

If you were happy and know your way around the 22rec engine I say go for it.

Lots of threads do lots of reading make sure you drive one of the 3.0 engines .

Under no circumstance drive a 3.4 if you do your done you won`t be happy till you have your own.

Ponder my first point!!

A lot of these trucks leak oil. They are old, the seals and gaskets start to fail. Mine is a 3.0 and it leaks oil.

Point is: your new truck might leak oil too (slowly but surely). You might be back to square one again!

Get a 1st gen Tacoma with the 3RZ-FE. Same power output as a 3VZ-E but a 4cyl and better MPG. Plus, the engines in the Tacoma's are loads more reliable than a 22re or 3vze. No major problems with either engine. Either of the Tacoma engines are just as easy, in my experience EASIER, to work on. Better diagnostics ability, fewer vacuum lines. 22res have issues with the timing chain? Oh, the 3rzfe timing chain is considered a lifetime part. Ever hear of rampant head gasket issue of the 3rzfe? No? Oh because they aren't as common as on a 22re or 3vze.

it's a huge overstatement to say the 3vze is way faster than the 22re , as someone stated above . They're both equally anemic .


The only certainty I have discovered when comparing the two motors , is that the 3vze performs better when you weigh it down , big surprise .

My little 22re is a dog when fully loaded , I guess it doesn't help I'm turning 37's ...

Your right about that, fast is no where in a 90's models 4x4 toyotas vocabulary! Lol but all in all my 3.0 is my choice over my old 22re any day! Both are tough, and both are dependable! But 3.0 is the way to go if you have any intentions at all of pulling anything other than your self!

Depends also on where in the country you plan to do a lot of your driving. Here in high Colorado we don't see many 22re's. A normally aspirated engine loses about 17% of it's power at 5000 feet (Denver), and about 30% at 10,000 feet. The brave little 4-banger just doesn't have enough left after that. Not that the 3.0 really hauls up the hills, but it will get you there. I periodically pull my 2200 lb pop-up camper over 11,000 foot Monarch pass, and can maintain 40 mph on the 7 and 8% grades involved. Takes about 4300 rpm in 2nd gear to do it, but the 3vz doesn't seem to mind that at all.

3.0 slow a lot faster?..now that's funny..Ive had both and driven many of both and while the 3.0 is slightly faster..and very slighty and is refered as 3.slowwwwwww for a reason is is truly a pain in the a s to work on...22RE and its not even close..more reliable and very easy to work on and best of all aftermarket is full of 22RE upgraded parts available and 3.0 not so much...then theres the resale value if u ever want to sell it..people will hesitate when buying a vehicle with the 3.0 ..they have earned that reputation for a reason...all those people cant be wrong about dogging the 3.0...if you want power get a vehicle with a 3.4..nowthats a 6 cyclinder...

ive gone through 2 22res, both of them were over rated, in the way of it being "bomb proof,". one blew a head gasket after it lost a little coolant, then the other threw a rod after turning like 5k rpms. i cannot talk about the 3.0, as i havent had one, but from the write ups of procedures, they seem somewhat annoying to work on. every 3.0 ive seen in a junkyard has had just as many if not more miles than my 22re's. (250k+, some in the 450k region) That being said, The 22re is VERY simple to work on, minus just about EVERY bolt being a different freaking size. but both motors are plagued with head gasket problems to a certain degree. if you have the time and money go 3rz (4 cyl) or a 5vz (6 cyl).

BTW, not saying the 22re is a BAD MOTOR, just saying i feel its way over rated. i still roll with one.

I’ve got a 22RE “bullet proof” aka “million mile motor” in my 2000 PreRunner & will drive it until the wheels fall off

Did you swap the original 3RZ engine out for that 22re? If so, why would you go through that much work to downgrade?
