22R Timing

I'm new to this forum so if I'm the wrong section, sorry in advanced. I have an 87 Toyota pick up and it's spitting and sputtering. I've replaced the fuel line from the gas tank to the fuel pump, rebuilt the carb, new fuel tank and replaced the fuel filter. I'm pretty sure the timing needs a little adjusting. Can someone give me a step by step instructional on how to adjust the timing? I took the cap off but I couldn't figure it out. I know i sound like a dummy. I've pretty much done everything but messed with the timing on this thing though so I'm thinking it has to be that. thanks for any help at all.
