22R engine noise
Hi all,
im buying a 1989 toyota hilux (may be different to what its called in us?) with a 22r motor on Saturday for $500 which is a real bargain as in Australia these things are still worth anything over $5000 in road worthy condition.
only hitch is the previous owner stopped driving it when it started making a 'noise'. he cant tell me much more then that. according to him first 2 years ago he told me it was meant to be a spun bearing but now he thinks it was timing chain. so im buying it a bit blind toi be honest which make me nervous.
either way a engine out of a wreck here is $1100 min. but i can get the crank ground and rods resized if it needs it for about $200 so its not to bad.
but basically what im asking is at 320,000km what's the chances its spun a bearing. i know timing chains are a problem so im thinking its prob that more then anything?
thanks allot,
regards jay

could be anything, some guys have spun bearings 30 miles after a rebuild...
I would get the truck and fire it up and see what happens....built long blocks here in the US are about $1100, if you can find one for that price I would go that route because the junk yard motors are a crap shoot too...

i certainly agree about the second hand motors. i cant see how any second hand junk would be any better then what i have.
i suppose ill have to fire it up, cant do too much more damage i suppose. ill just check and see if the timing chain is obviously slack and the guide is still intact before i do so.
seeing as it hasnt been run too long with a spun bearing ide be surprised if there was allot of damage to the crank or retainers?
anyway only time will tell,

ok pulled her down....heres the list:
cracked rings on all but second cylinder
cracked skirt on 4th piston and chunk missing
all valves are pitted and pretty much screwed
and best of all spun big end bearing on 2nd cylinder
so unless i can find a decent second hand crank im not going to be able to afford a rebulid any time soon. worst thing is in australia these engines are worth $1100 second hand min. thats not even rebuilt. a reco you are looking at at least $3000.
so im starting to consider an engine swap. 3.8 buic is on the cards but 2.6 mitsubishi engines are cheap as and i know them back to front. personally i think they are a great motor apart from weak heads and crummy valve stem seals. much more power too. (145 stock when efi) can get a good runner for about $150 with full efi set up. i some how doubt it would bolt up tho so will need to do the maths.
so what are your thoughts. rebuild her or start looking?
thanka allot,
