85-up 22R and 22RE blocks and heads should be the same. However, the 22r was carbureted and has a mechanical fuel pump and as such has an eccentric lobe on the camshaft to drive the fuel pump whereas the 22re is injected so it has a block off plate where the fuel pump would go and there is a shim / washer on the end of the camshaft where the lobe for the fuel pump would be. You'll need to move the block-off plate from the 22re to the 22r and can change the shim for the eccentric if you'd like, but it shouldn't hurt anything to leave it.
I have successfully put an 88 22R in to a 91 22RE chassis and only had the above to deal with.
If the 22R is from before 85 (and possibly some 85's too), it may or may not be the same (likely not). There may be differences in exhaust port shapes and other subtle differences that make it difficult to correctly swap the old engine design into a newer chassis.

the most noticable difference between the 81-84 22r and the 85-95 22r heads are the combustion chambers the early 22r uses dome top pistons and the later uses flat top pistons. so flip em over if the combustion chambers are the same shape your good to go.
85-95 22r heads and 22re heads are the same even the cams are identical
x2 with abe on the fuel pump issue

I'm looking at doing this same thing. will the 22re motor mount right up to pretty well everything on my 87 22r? and does it make a difference that the 22re is from a 2wd? thanks guys.

Beyond that, everything from power steering pump, alternator and a/c compressor to transmissions will bolt right up.

You can see the ports without disassembling the engine: just look at where the exhaust manifold bolts up. The ports should be 'pear' shaped:

To put an engine from a 2wd into a 4wd or vice-versa, you'd have to swap the oil pan and pickup tube from one to the other.
Engine: 2wd. Truck: 4wd- need oil pan and pick up tube from 4wd engine installed on 2wd engine.
Engine: 4wd. Truck: 2wd- need oil pan and pick up tube from 2wd engine installed on 4wd engine.
Engine: 2wd. Truck: 2wd- nothing to do with oil pan.
Engine: 4wd. Truck: 4wd- nothing to do with oil pan.
And there's no difference if the engine is from a truck or 4Runner, 22R or 22RE, the above still applies.

I swaped the running gear in my samurai to all 85 Toyota, axles, trans, transfercase,and 22r. It worked fantastic but the weber would stumble on step hills making it difficult in competition. I stole the EFI from a Buddys wrecked 91 celica. Everything bolted up perfect I have had some trouble mating the engine management harness to my custom harness I installed in the samurai. I need to no what fuel pressure I should be running I have a 55psi pump feeding it now. My main issue is it starts but only runs for a few seconds then shuts down it wont fire imeditly after it shuts down, if I wait a couple of minutes it will start but fall on its face. I cant get it running long enough to get it timed. Im kinda at a loss. Can anyone guide me to any one that has done a carb to EFI swap.

How to identify your engine 20r/22r/22re block and head
1980 and earlier have round intake, everything after that is square.
75-80 is round <=> round
81-84 is square <=> round
85+ is square <=> pear
