22r to 22re

I have a 1986 4runner 22re and the head gasket blew so I bought another 22r motor but come to find out it will not fit right up for fuel injection since it is an earlier 22r motor. I don't know if he head is cracked or warped so I don't want to switch heads. Is there a conversion kit to go from 22r to 22re? The intake bolts dont line up. Is there anything else that I need to know about the swap?

It has nothing to do with 22R to 22RE, it has to do with you getting a pre-85 engine. You can't do anything with it. Go find an 85+ 22R or 22RE. 85+ 22R and 22RE use the same block, head, etc and just have a different intake and a few other minor differeces.

You cannot use 84-earlier engines with your 86 EFI setup. No one makes a conversion kit either.

You can find all the parts used to convert it to EFI

But by the time you get it all gathered up no doubt cheaper to buy a 85 plus engine.

I tried to install the EFI on a pre 85 block and it would take a lot of machine work to make it work if at all. 84 Celicas were fuel injected but I have not seen one, and you might could use its injection system.

I am currently doing a 22r to 22re convrsion and have started a thread on it and still doing it. I have done them before, but it is a big job and something you need to look into. You have to swap fuel tank, fuel line, and all harnesses which requires tearing a truck down quit a bit. Even what I have posted doesnt count all of the details and work involved.

864runner4x4.

Here is a short version on a conversion and I need to add more to it.

Here is the longer version. I have a ton of time into the conversion and it isn't possible to get all of the information in, but it is still far better then what I had to start with the first time.

Wyoming9..I have a picture somewhere on trying to add the EFI on an 84 block and it will take me a while to find it. I had seen several different answers on converting one and never could find out if it was possible. So I tried it for myself. What I found was the bolt hole on each end were correct but the center ones were 180 degrees out. It might could of been done if someone wanted to machine the intake bolts in the head but I figured it was to costly to try that. It still would need the bosses for the fuel filter and knock sensor which could be over come if really wanted too.

I have seen one picture of an 84 EFI Celica and the Plenum looked like what is on our trucks but it wasn't the best picture. Is the Celica EFI completely different then the trucks? I had an 83 carbed Celica and one day want to come across another one. I always like them, mine rusted away into oblivion. Wish I had a garage full of them.

The early EFI looks pretty much the same some minor differences.

I did send the OP a pm if they are any where within driving distance I most likely have all the parts they need .

The only real major difference is in the head manifold bolts on both intake and exhaust.

Then the whole block height difference so all the timing cover goodies are all different.

The it has been quite a few years since I was into the early engines.

Granted it would be very expensive to try and convert the old style head and block to the newer EFI
