Okay guys, I need some help here. My 87 sr5 4runner with the original 22re starts fantastic. Rolls over only a few revolutions before it's done with the starter. I know, makes the title misleading right? Well... That's when the truck is cold and occasionally warm. That's right, occasionally. It's tempermental. When warm, I often do not even get a solenoid click when the key is turned, and I know enough about electrical systems to understand that what that means is that electricity is not getting to the starter, and there is an issue somewhere between my battery and the starter.

Extra details: The battery is close to new. Close enough that I know it's not the problem. It was replaced with the starter, which was less than 6 months ago. I did not remove my battery cables when I replaced the starter, but I really hope that I didn't fry any wires, however, is that possible that they'll only not carry current when warm if I shorted it?

Thanks for reading guys and please help me out with this. I'm sick of pushing this old truck and jumping the clutch!

test the starter, battery and ignition. just because it is new doesn't mean it works... thats why we have a warrenty...

no ya didn`t hurt anything buy leaving the battery ground on while changing starter.

Well the trouble is that I can't really test it properly. My battery carries over 12v normal and does not drop below 9.5v when cranking, so that's normal, and if I use a solenoid override (I'd guess you say) from battery straight to the starter, the motor turns fine, signaling an issue with my ignition. But my ignition is working at the time too. I'm away from home every time the issue comes up and am without tools to test with. Any other suggestions or something I may be missing?

I bought the starter at Advance Auto Parts. OEM parts are so dang expensive. What kind should I get though?

Well the wires going from the battery to the starter aren't very long and easy to get at but they are insulated, check them out and see if there's a short somewhere maybe or possibly you don't have a good ground off the starter or somethin... Not sure why it would be tempermental..I'd maybe throw new contacts in the starter or just buy a new one, I won't bother with OEM there's no reason I've had great luck with rebuilds

when it comes to electrical parts with these things, you are best of with OEM parts, but yu can get lucky with auto store stuff.

Go to a local starter/alternator shop and have them put it all new parts contacts, plunger, gear everything.. that's quality and half the price

As a late update, the problem stopped after I just got sick of messing with wires that were perfectly fine and simply replaced the battery connectors. Turns out my negative side would just slide right off... Anyway, there have been no problems since, so clean grounds and a good battery connection is all you really need. As long as the problem stays simple, that is.
