22 RE rough idle

Ok guys I took my truck down to the local toy guys and had a compression test done (everything was in specs), new plugs, wires, cap etc..... along with an oil change while I was there and a complete front to back inspection done.

230$ later it still idles like crap. I bounces around 950 rpms with an occasional jump to 2000 rpms. It didn't jump before the work was done. I've pulled the plug wires while it was running (ouch twice) and it didn't change the idle on any of them....... still don't know what that means. The one thing I do know is that if you pull the oil fill cap the motor will "exhale" and then die. I even replaced the PCV valve to no effect.

Please tell me this is something easy to fix. I spent all of my date money for the wife tonight on this thing and it still doesn't run well. It starts every time, runs out well on the highway and seems to be ok at higher rpms or under a load.

What really bothers me is the idle and the fact that I can smell fuel at the exhaust (this will be replaced as soon as I get paid again) so all my "economy" is flying out the back end.

I'm going to start an extensive search on the forums for "22re rough idle" and see what I can find. In the mean time if you have any ideas please let me know.

Ricky.

Have a read up on blocking the EGR (exhaust gas recirculation). Try blocking it off (very easy to do) and if that solves the problem, then your EGR is defective. Many people here keep the EGR blocked and say it runs much better. The EGR is an emission control device which helps a poorly tuned engine pass emissions tests and is really just a band aid solution.

If the EGR valve is stuck open, it dumps exhaust into the intake. The exhaust fumes don't burn and thus maybe you're creating a rich mixture by having the exhaust displace fresh air in the combustion chamber.

Yep! That's one of the symptoms. At a stop light it will take about 2 seconds to build up from 950 rpms to 1500-2000 rpms. I adjusted the idle screw and it still idles rough at 950 rpms but only surges up to about 1200 rpms.

Driving it like this won't hurt anything while I try to figure it out will it?

Thanks again.

Try cleaning your throttle body THEN resetting the idle to 750rpm. I don't know if the surging idle can be caused by a faulty ERG, but I suppose its possible. I am pretty certain you would benefit from pulling off the throttle body [careful with the Throttle Position Sensor (TPS)] and scrubbing the inside with a rag on a screwdriver. Spray first with TB (throttle body) cleaner. DO NOT use carb cleaner.

First, block off your EGR to see if that is part of the problem- I would be suprised if it isn't.

Some other possibilities:
  • Your TPS is faulty
  • your Air Flow Mter (AFM) is faulty
  • you've skipped a tooth on the timing chain
  • one of your spark plugs it fouled

Looks like this is my list for the weekend. Dang it but I wanted to start putting money into lockers and tires........ first things first though huh? Get that motor and drive train back into tip top shape then start with the goodies.

Thanks all.
