1st gen mud flaps question
I just got a set of 4 mudflaps with brackets from a guy who took them off of his 85(i think) truck. I assumed they would fit my 89 4runner and gave him 20 to ship them to me. Now that I have them I am having a hard time figuring out how they mount. I can't seem to get many of the holes to line up. Is there a difference in the flaps between 85 truck and 89 4runner? If so, anybody want to buy a set of 4 mudflaps? I was under the impression that almost everything was the same on 4runners and trucks between 84 and 89. Thanks for you help.

if your 4runner has brackets already then take the flaps off the 85 brakes and screw them right in... they should fit perfectly.... sounds to me like your trying to do brackets pf brackets....

I know the rear ones are different , the 4runner ones are moulded to fit the bumper and the 85 ones are just a flat piece of rubber.
I have the 2 rear ones for the 89 4runner and I need the ones you have for my 88 ... wanna trade?

RMA: 89 4runner is a 1st gen. It belongs with the 84-89 4runners and 84-88 trucks I believe. I think mine is supposed to have the flat piece of rubber.
I guess I just don't really know what the brackets do. I have searched for an example on here but couldn't find anything very helpful. I got 4 mudflaps and 4 brackets in the mail. I assumed I was to use the flap and the bracket. I'll take a pic later to make more sense of what I am trying to say. Thanks for the help so far.

On my 86 pickup they are almost exactly the opposite. Front has brackets, rear is flat.

My bad I should have clarified , I have mudflaps from a 1989 2nd gen 4runner, not a 1989 1st gen 4runner. So I geuss you have a 1989 1st gen then and the ones I have wont fit.

Forgive me if I sound like a noob here but what is an 89 2nd gen 4runner? I thought the 2nd gens started in 90 with the 2 door non-removable hard top model.

I agree with junker. Unless there is some month in 89 they started 2nd gen. A lot of people get confused because the trucks switched body styles in 89 but the 4runner switched in 90. Maybe this is right?

THe second gens actually started in 89 when the 1st gen ended , I just finished parting a second gen with a build date of 10/89 on the door . I know normally 2nd gens are seen to have started in 1990, but I am just going from what was on the door for the 4runner . My friend also has one with a build date of 9/89. These are and were 4 doors .

Gotcha. To clarify, I have a 1st Gen 89. So I am still a little confused since I have nothing correct to compare mine to. If anybody has mudflaps on their 1st gen 4runner please post a picture and/or breif explanation of how they are mounted. I still can't find a clear enough picture of one with mudflaps to use as a guide. Thanks for the help so far.

RMA, you are right and you are wrong...
yes, the build date can say as early as 6/89 (i believe) but they were all SOLD as a 90 year model... thus, it doesnt matter what the build dates are, the 2nd gens are 90-95.5...
my build date is 11/89 but on the paperwork from the dealer and the DMV its a 90 4runner...
junkers is right about the mud flaps tho, they are opposites on the 1st gen runners and 2nd gen trucks...
maybe swap the fronts for the rears and see if you can make the brackets work, or just make your own bracket out of 1/4" flatstock steel...

Thanks a lot. It made me realize I have the wrong flaps. I guess I have the flaps and brackets for a 2nd gen truck instead of 4runner. Guess not all the stuff is interchangeable. Oh well. Thanks a lot Junkers and everybody else. You wouldn't be interested in selling your flaps would you Junkers?
