1st gen 4runner roof rack/cargo racks

Lets see em! Keep it to the 1st gens only please! I'm trying to get an idea of how to mount/build mine especially with having a fiberglass roof. I'm looking to build one with a low profile and low weight but anything you guys have built/seen post it up.

Yakima Load Warior. I'm waiting untill I run a cross the extention for the rack to make it longer then I'm going to hard mount it through the top. For now it's mounted to the gutters on the cab up front and the fiberglas gutters in the rear. I KNOW this is a bad idea but it's worked out for me so far... And I've hauled ALOT of stuff up there.

That right there is one of my next steps. I need to start hauling gear on top since the cargo area is limited. That and I'll have to move my light bar forward a little but that's easy to do.

Props to you firefighter!

Can we change this to all gen roof racks? We will get more hits and the ideas are the same. Easy to change between gens.

RMA, how much does that thing weigh? Looks rather heavy. 100hp hates heavy things.

Here's what I'm thinking of putting on mine. It's kinda pricey but it will allow you to utilize the full space of the removable top. I know people who have put them on Jeeps and they are light weight and can support the weight of my friend Jeff (220 lbs.) and a roof top tent. It might be what you are looking for.
As I'm looking for a roof rack for mine also I will let you know what I decide to do or let you know of any other options I find.
Good luck.

Not sure what it weighs but I dont think its that heavy , its all pretty thin metal. Ill guess around 50lbs maybe

Roof rack

I own a 1986 4Runner and I was in college and strapped for $$ but desperately needed a roof rack for kayaking and surfing. I bought a used second generation roof rack and installed that. My camera is not connecting to my computer at the moment, but it looks and works great! I can fit 2 kayaks or up to 6 surfboards on the roof. I will post my pics as soon as it connects.

Another Rola

You can get these pretty cheap from Amazon.

I put the extension on mine. I think it fills up the top pretty good.

It's pretty low profile, I think the Rola is probably one of the shortest ready made ones out there. I got the track idea from another guy here on yotatech. It makes it easy to replace the rack with slide on bars for carrying kayaks or whatnot.

I am using the mounting hardware kit (upside down) that came with the rack for now.

No pictures just a quick word of advice. If you want to go hard core you can all ways add some glass covered metal tube supports to that fiberglass top, and vastly exceed it's stock load capacity. Not sure what they rate those tops for, but for reference a 1/4 inch leer fiberglass top is only rated for 150-175lbs. Doesn't take a very large cooler to exceed that.

I have a 87 4runner and i was wondering if anyone has used the bolts that the removable top is on and then built bars up on that to support a cargo rack. SO the bars would go up and over the top of the 4runner from the removable top and then you could attach a cargo basket on that. This would get all the weight off the shell and also it would allow you to use the cargo basket when the top is off. This is just an idea. Let me know what you think.

Here is "TUCK" I purchased the wide body yakima foot and drilled the fiberglass and anchored the bolts inside to install the crossbars.
