i have an 89 first gen. sr5 4runner and just got the powerwindows working and the rear window goes up and down when i push the button located in the center console and when the rear window is down and i put the key into the keyhole in the tailgate the window will go up , when the window is rolled up and i stick the key in the keyhole in the tailgate the window doesnt go down , is it supposed to go down by using the key or does it only raise it back up when its down using the key?

It should go both up and down with the tailgate key.

I had the problem of it not going up.
Fixed mine fairly easy.
I took the control switch out, popped it open, cleaned it up, lightly sanded the contact points and the two little nubs that hold up the contact disc (I guess that's what it's called), stretched the spring slightly to make sure the contact points were touching when the key was turned and that did it for me.
It was very annoying having to walk back and forth to get in the back.

so i take it the control switch is the part that the key goes into on the rear tailgate , which you can get to by removing the panel behind the tailgate?

Yes it is.
Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner, I actually worked yesterday woot!

I can explain the process in detail if you haven't got it fixed yet.
I didn't dive into the electrical side of the problem because I figured if it goes down with the key then it should go up as well.
I'm thinking of doing a little write up for it w/pics 'cause i'ts a common prob with our trucks as well as the switch on the center console.

The soldered contacts on mine we looking weak, so I put a nice helping of solder over the wire and three contacts under the protective rubber covering. It was a real bitch to take that off and work on it. I talking about that entire plastic piece with the key hole on it.

1985 4runner, 6" lift, 33's, headers.
