1st gen 4runner leaking gear oil from shifter only
So I got home yesterday after a long day of driving all around town. When I was just a few blocks from my house, I notice a smell inside the cab, gear oil. So when I got home, there was a puddle of gear oil underneath the yota. I took a quick peek and saw that it was wet from the top side. I immediately thought it was maybe the transfer case but decided till this morning to remove console from inside to get a better view from atop. when I removed the shifter console I noticed it was wet only around the shifter base particularly around the boot. Now, I did fill the tranny about two months ago with gear oil due to an oil drip I had. Could this have been the tranny puking out the excess gear oil that it may have had? or something else? should I add gear oil? thanks in advance

pull the fill plugs to check the level, that will tell you if you need to add fluid. did you fill it through the fill hole or through the top with shifter removed?

I filled thru the shifter. seems like when it puked it out, it got some to the driveshaft down to the diff and also to the top of the transfer case.

just make sure then cause i'm about to do it, do I remove drain plug and if there is oil coming out then that's the excess oil? do I let it drain till it stops?

you most likely just overfilled it and it puked it back out. its much easier to fill through the shifter especially if you have no fluid transfer pump. just make sure you also remove the fill plug on the side when you fill through the shifter to avoid overfilling. i'd remove the fill plug and let the excess drain, clean everything off real good with some brake clean, taker her for a spin, and recheck for leaks. also, a fresh application of some rtv on the shifter base would be a good idea as well.
