Check the throttle cable. http://personal.utulsa.edu/~nathan-b...32prelimin.pdf On the A340H, the throttle cable does not set shift points (that's electronic), but how "hard" it shifts. As in, your problem.

thanks for link and reply but wouldn't it shift hard all time if it was throttle cable? it only shifts hard into 1st while cold and sometimes 1st-2nd while cold. when get operating temp shifts perfect.

I don't know. But if you check the throttle cable and it's set incorrectly, fix it. If that doesn't make the problem go away, then continue with your diagnosis.

Here's the page with general diagnosis http://personal.utulsa.edu/~nathan-b...30generalt.pdf (listing throttle cable as the first thing to check under "harsh shifting.") The other items are well beyond my personal comfort zone.

Did you ever find the issue? I'm having the exact same problem, found this on a search. Going to try and adjust throttle cable tomorrow

Its probably a loose clutchpack that slips until it gets warm....when its cold it slips a little right as it shifts and bangs in gear. When warmed up the packs expand enough to not slip. Talk to a tranny shop about a friction modifier additive. May help.

Could also be a sticky solenoid that doesnt like the cold.

Does it seems to rev a little as it shifts and then clunk into second? dddddwaaaappow.

Highlux... Ya those will next steps thx. I don't recall it revving up before the shift, but I'll pay more attention to it. Just seems to be a hard shift, a good jolt.

Never found cause of problem. My suggestion let truck warm up 5 mins or so before driving. I've found that to help some. Also added lucas transmisson additive. but warm that stuff up bc its like goo if not hot.

Thanks for the reply. I checked throttle cable and found it a little long, adjusted but no help, seems that's the fix when trans shifts hard in all gears. The next steps in FSM are beyond me so I might have to pay out some $$$.

could this be caused by a faulty torque converter? I am now hearing a rattling noise around the torque converter area?

Hard shifts are generally caused by high line pressure, or a bad accumulator. Your torque converter may be going bad, but I don't think that it is causing your hard shifts.

The fact that yours shifts hard only in 1-2 makes me suspect the valve body.

Does it shift hard on the downshift as well? Does it shift hard from N to D?
