1993 Yota Pickup Dome Light Upgrade

I found a dome light from an SR5 that I wanted to put in my 1993 base model extended cab pickup. I removed my original rearview mirror that didn't have a light. I went to hook up the new dome light with mirror and the plug wasn't there to plug it in. I was curious if maybe its stashed somewhere or if It just didn't have one. Anyone know?

Most likely don't have one and you will need to run one, look inside the left-hand A pillar

That kind of sucks. I figured that wiring with a plug would be there just like with other stuff that didn't come installed.

Easier to look in the a pillar than to fish around under that vinyl give it a look might be there..

Extended cabs and runners do not have a dome light at the mirror. I have done this upgrade to both extended cabs and runners that you are wanting to do. You need a standard cab dome light and what I do is run the wire behind the front window trim over to the A-Pillar and I tap into the wiring over there. It is a very handy upgrade if you do a lot of night driving. https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f199...l#post51731187 You will have a solid black wire and a black wire with a white stripe. If you grab the wiring out of a standard cab truck, it will be marked the same way and all you need to do is connect like wire to like wire. Also when you do this upgrade, install an LED bulb for a little better lighting.

My 94 is a single cab dlx, so it had the cabin light at the mirror already and the sr5 wiring. My 86 4runner is an sr5 so it also has map lights already.

looking at the interior lighting assembly diagrams reminds me the pig tail is rather long, maybe twelve inches. So if you have the wire it's likely tucked up in a bundle and very far to the left-hand side. Look for it there in the A pillar or bundled about midway across the roof.

You can tap into the existing cabin light, I think that's what Terry shows in the link he provided but it's a little dark to be certain.

Yep, If you could not find an existing wire for map lights, just tap...
I have an 86 but should be pretty close. The supply wire to the dome light runs up from the A-pillar, through the area above the door. Just fish it out of there and tap. That's what I did when I installed my LED strip cabin light.

If I tap into that wiring will the option for the light to come on when the door opens still work? is there a more detailed step by step walk through to do this?

The cabin light has a three position switch, 1 is constant on and uses a local ground, 2 is constant off no ground, 3 is grounded by the door switch (usually in conjunction with the integration relay, depending on model year)

It should be obvious what to take power and ground from. But when in doubt get your meter out..

PS does that mean you couldn't find the factory wire for a map light? Because if you don't have the wire you likely need the bracket that light mirror assembly uses.

Next only to our senses (common included), the multi-meter is the most important electrical tool. There is absolutely no excuse for not having one if you want to work on your own vehicle. Harbor Freight is your friend

OP,
Find the 3 wires in this schematic and wire accordingly.

And how do you find those wires?
