1993 22RE High Mileage vs 1990 3.Slow low mileage

Hi everyone,

I could use a quick opinion from you. I'm looking at 3 different 4Runners, all with their own charm. I'm new to 4runners and, really, truck stuff in general. So sorry if I sound like an idiot!

1)
1993 22RE w/ 175k miles 5sp manual. Seems like it's decently taken care of, but hard to know for sure. Engine felt a little rough/a little loud driving it around. I think I can snag it for $1500 though! Comes with an extra set of studded wheels (I'm in Alaska). I think it has stock "smaller tires"

2)
1990 3.0 V6 w/ 110k miles, 5ps manual. Also seems decently taken care of. No extra tires, but runs smooth. $3k. It has 16's on it.

3)
1990 3.0 V6 w/ 140k miles, automatic. The guy has taken immaculate care of it and has replaced lots of various components. Runs really smooth as well, if a bit sluggish. Also has an extra set of wheels and i THINK 16's.. $3k

I'm tempted to go for #1 and just drive that bastard into the ground (I'd mostly use it for commuting).

Thoughts?

PS. These forums have been awesome helping me figure stuff out, thanks guys!

I have had both and prefer the 22re. An that's not high mileage. My dd 4runner is creapin towards 230k. In my opinion the 3.0 is harder to work on. More expensive to rebuild, and not as reliable. Plus for 1500$ that's a great price. You can take the other 1500$ that you would spend on #2 or #3 and put it into the truck and motor as have a great Runner.

175 is just getting broken in. Go for that, one being the cheapest and lot more reliable and best mpg.

Definitely skip #3. 3.0 with the auto is a dog. Ive had #1 and #2 cant go wrong with either truck. I like the power of the v6 but the gas mileage and aftermarket support of the 22re is very big plus. good luck

Thanks for the advice everyone. I ended up going with the 22RE for $1800. Still no complaints on my end! I'm looking forward to getting her into tip top shape, so I'll definitely be annoying guys in the future too!

I'm picking it up tomorrow, but here's a snapshot of it from when I test drove it. (I took others, but they suck!) More to come!

Just last month I replaced the head gasket on my 22r that has 178,000 on it and you could still faintly make out the hone marks in the cylinders .that sold me on what everyone has said that thay run forever.i got it off my wife's uncle and he ran the **** out of it for years .oh and I only had to change the head gasket because it was leaking oil from the front were I changed the timing chain.

22res are tough as nails. As long as the timing chain guilds are in tact I would say no worries! Mine broke at 225k miles of very hard abuse! It's a very easy thing to check. Take about 5 mins to pull the valve cover then just see if they are intact. But at that price it's practically a steal even of you gotta tear it down and put new ones in.

Thats a good truck! If you ever sell it it will be worth way more than you paid. I had one one with a 3.0 and it didn't ever let me down but it sucked gas and had a crappy tranny and tcase compared to the w56 and gear drive case your truck has. 4 door runners are pretty rare with a 22re. If you can keep it from rusting it will last you the rest of your life.
