1991 Toyota Pickup 22RE

Alrighty, to start i tried to find another thread that was about this issue, needless to say i couldn't find any.

The previous owner installed a Kill Switch to the fuel pump.
I changed the Oil/Filter.
Changed the Fuel Filter.
Changed the Spark Plugs.
Filled the Gas Tank

So, i got this 1991 Toyota Pickup with an 22RE. It has been sitting for over a year and a half.. I replaced the battery and tried to start it. The starter would not turn, so i took it out and tested it. I was told that the starter motor was shot by O'Reillys. So i cracked the starter open, parts were new and someone had installed the guts of it wrong. I redid them. Hot wired it with jumps, spun perfectly. Reinstalled it.

I cranked the truck, it started up. It sounded great. It ran for about two minutes then it stopped. With the Kill Switch flipped to on, it should have made a noise but the fuel pump had stopped. So i kicked the gas tank, and the fuel pump started to hum to life. Assuming it was working i hopped in the Cab and tried to start it. It will only Crank, it won't turn over it will only Crank.

I've checked for loose wires, i've checked the spark. I've checked the Vacuum lines. That's all i've had time to do.
I'm going to go out on a whim and assume it's the pump.
Any ideas are appreciated. Thanks for looking!

Welcome !!

I feel sorry for you !!

I think your quite correct with the fuel pump. Might be electrical or just old and tired.

Do you have any idea just how this kill switch was installed and why??

It could be the source of all the problems . Added connections that were poorly done.

Um, i can get you a picture later. But the red(battery cable) goes to the switch then down to the fuel pump. And the black one goes back to the battery. Or so i believe. It could be entirely wrong but it seems like it's one of those $4 electrical swtiches!
have absolutely no idea why it was installed to begin with.
I will double check this A.S.A.P seeing as it 20 miles away in a storage unit.
Thanks for your help and i'll get back to you soon!

Without being sure if this is just a kill switch or the fuel pump circuit being bypassed and wired direct .

There is a switch in the AFM that needs to be closed once the engine is running meaning the complete air intake system need to be installed for the pump to keep running

I believe that it is just a kill switch because i was able to drive it for just a minute or too! The complete air intake system is installed too!

Why not bypass kill switch to verify it is the problem or replace it. Really sounds like fuel pump tho might be coming on and off and just not putting out like it should.

Also consider draining the old gas and replacing with fresh gas, could be watered down or just nasty (like varnish) a new fuel filter wouldn't be a bad idea either (hint it's hidden under the intake manifold)

Good luck!
