I have a 1991 toyota truck with 330000 miles and a tired, worn out 3.0. I dont know what to do, i know that it runs on 5 cylinders and that the entire engine is worn out. I looked into rebuilding the engine, it would cost about 2,000 bucks. I found a place online offering them for 1500 with a 3 year warranty, unlimited mileage. I cant decide if I should rebuild it so that I know what is in it, or if I should just buy one and hope for the best.

I have rebuilt one of these before. They suck to get out. They suck to tear apart. They suck to buy parts for. They suck once they are in the truck. There are so many things that one has to buy for these engines. You have to buy all new head bolts. You have to buy new rod and main bolts. You have to get the valves adjusted while the truck is running at a toyota garage because they are adjusted by shims. It costs about another 1500 bucks.

Then, in 34000 miles its probably going to suck when the head gasket goes out. I dont want to put some engine in the truck that is just going to break. I also dont what to rebuild my engine, and If I buy a new one, I dont know if i should send my 330,000 mile core back, or if I should send them some junker from a wreck.

dont waist on a 3.0 but instead go for a 3.4, 4.3, 350. Anything but a 3.0 Lots of info here and on the web to help you with just about any motor swap you could think of.

mine is coming up soon (super charged 3.4) I have 236xxx on my 3.0 and if the 3.4 will get that kind of mileage with 50-60 more hp and better gas mileage for the same price as rebuliding you can't go wrong.

i KNOW but my concern is that with more power, it would probably take out the transmission or the rear end. + this is going to be a highway truck, not an off roader.

If I recall, your tranny and rear end will easily handle a 3.4 swap.

LOL who ever said putting in the 22RE is DAMN crazy, i personally dont think the 3.0 is all THAT bad compared to the 22RE other than the fact that when it breaks its something major, but this one lasted for 330000 miles(compared to the 200,000 22REs make, if that) and there was NO maintenance done to the timing belt or anything. It still runs, but it only hits on 5 cylinders(probably the timing belt) and its so damn underpowered for a v6

Your drivetrain will hold up fine with a 3.4. IMO its
stronger than the factory-equipped 3.4 truck's drivetrain.
Plus, if this is a highway truck, you'd probably be fine with
a 350 on stock drivetrain, as it won't really see too much
abuse. Hurry up and snag a 3.4 before they become a
thing of the past

Doing a 22RE would be one of the harder swaps. Mounts, crossmember, transmission, etc. Too much money, too much time.

The 3.4 is mechanically as close to a bolt-in as you can get. It matches to the transmission without adapters and uses the 3.0 motor mounts. You need to swap some stuff over and do some wiring, but it's pretty straightforward.

I'm almost at the one year anniversary of mine. In that time I've had over 46000 kms of trouble free driving. Totally worth it.
