1991 pickup 5speed trouble
Yesterday I was driving my truck fine all morning. Then my check engine light came on for no reason I had just changed the oil with mobil 1 full synthetic oil and added a k&n air filter the previous day. I checked my fluids and fuel cap but it wouldn't go out. Then today my shifter just popped out of gear but the trans stayed in gear until I stopped on the side of the road. Then it worked fine for half the afternoon then it started being really hard to put in and out of gears even reverse. So I am wondering if anyone has had this happen before or what you guys think could be wrong. I was thinking clutch but if I press it in it disengages and revs fine and engaged again fine no weird noises.

Any trouble codes? Check engine light doesn't typically come on for transmission problems. Have you checked the fluid level on your master cylinder. A good test for a clutch is to get going 20 mph or so put the transmission in 5th gear and rev the engine up, then dump the clutch if rpm's drop quickly and clutch engages smoothly your pressure plate is grabbing, if rpm's drop slowly the pressure plate is probably worn and needs to be replaced. Air in the clutch system can cause symptoms of a bad clutch.

Ill try it out tomorrow and see what happens. I am going to pickup a code reader on payday and yes all fluids I can check from the hood are good but I need to check the trans it doesn't leak but ill check it tomorrow and see what it's at.

DO NOT pay a dime for a code reader, I'm going easy on you here as far as most forum member go! Do you have a paper clip or a short piece of wire? That's all you need. Here http://www.4crawler.com/4x4/CheapTricks/TroubleCodes/

4crawler is a fine resource, but in the end you always need the FSM. http://personal.utulsa.edu/~nathan-b...85diagnosi.pdf
